Nevada Appeal Staff Report

DAYTON - Dayton High's boys basketball team remained undefeated in its own Sutro Classic with a hard-fought 52-49 overtime victory over Truckee Friday night.

Dayton will play Silver Stage at 9 a.m. today. If the Dust Devils win they would play for the championship at 4 p.m.

In other games, Smith Valley beat Whittell 66-29, Bishop knocked off Silver Stage 60-47 and Fernley topped ROP 73-58.

Dayton coach Jason Santos was happy with the win, but unhappy with the way his team played.

"We did not play well," Santos said. "We shot horrendous from the foul line (49 percent). We shot a ton of free throws. We gutted it out. It was a physical game, and they beat us up. I can't fault the team for their effort."

Truckee's Clayton O'Connell dropped in a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to send the game into overtime tied at 47-all.

Dayton outscored Truckee 5-2 in the extra period. Dayton scored all of its points on free throws, three by Dylan Taylor (21 points) and two by Tim Ply.

Marcos Macias scored nine for the Dust Devils. Tony Rodriguez and James DePew scored 11 apiece for Truckee.

Dayton rallys for win

FERNLEY - Dayton brushed off some first-half jitters and rallied for a win over Sparks in the Dust Devils' season-opening game.

Dayton was down 20-14 at half but scored 15 third-quarter points to tie the game. Coach Cliff Serawap credited Ashley Hill with providing the Dust Devils with a much- needed spark when she came off the bench in third quarter.

Amber Brooks led the balanced scoring attack with 13 points. Taylor Hill and Maribel Ledezma each added seven points. Erin Edison scored six points and Ashley Hill added four.

Serawap said the young Dust Devils (only three players with varsity experience returned) had difficulty holding onto the ball early in the first half. However, they settled down in the second half and shot the ball well.

Dayton (1-0) plays against Lone Pine at 9 a.m. and against Silver Stage at 3 p.m. today.
