Free concert: College choir presents 'The Magic of Winter'

Get into a holiday mood with Western Nevada College Choir's annual free holiday concert, "The Magic of Winter," 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7 at Sarah Winnemucca Hall in the Aspen Building.

Choir director Bill Zabelsky mixes traditional music with unique selections that are sure to delight the audience. Songs include "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas" and "The Magic of Winter." Also performing will be the Douglas High School Madrigal Singers with "Westminster Carol" and "Deck the Halls."

Language classes invite students on

a world tour

If college is designed to broaden your horizons, then WNC can take you on a world tour. This spring, Western is offering more than 20 classes in foreign languages, including Japanese, Chinese, Italian, Spanish, French and Russian.

The college is pleased to announce that a very gifted linguist, Stephen Vance, will be teaching introductory Japanese and Chinese classes this spring.

He has extensively studied the languages and holds a master's degree in Chinese Language and Linguistics. Vance spent 15 years in China, five years in Japan and two in South Korea. He brings a deep knowledge of the culture, customs and history of China, Japan and Asia to the classroom.

Conversational Japanese (JPN 101B, Call # 19709, 3 units) is offered on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 5:30-6:45 p.m. Conversational Chinese (CHI 101B, Call # 10847, 3 units) is offered on Monday and Wednesday evenings, 5:30-6:45 p.m. Both classes are available on the Carson City campus.

Planning a trip to Italy? Potential tourists will want to take Conversational Italian I or II (ITAL101B, Call #19269 or ITAL102B, Call #13783, 3 units each) on Monday afternoons from 4-6:45 p.m. in Carson City.

Also on tap this spring are classes in Spanish, offered at Carson City, Fallon, Douglas, Fernley as well as online. Multiple courses and sections are offered, providing students choices between day and evening classes.

For those with some knowledge of the language and those who have taken the first semester courses, second semester classes are offered in French and Russian.

Spring registration continues

Online registration for spring classes at Western Nevada College is now in full swing. Continuing students began enrolling online last week and new students may begin on Monday, Dec. 6.

Spring classes start Monday, Jan. 24. Anyone registering must now utilize a personal e-mail address to complete the process. View a full list of classes at www.wnc.edu.

Galleries host

arts reception

WNC invites the public to meet artists Alison Harris, Jill Brugler and Michelle Legras Peltier at a free reception, 5-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 8 in the WNC Carson City Galleries.

The works of these three artists are showing in the galleries through Thursday, Jan. 27.

An exhibition of life drawings in ink by Alison Harris explores the reality of three women through a series of drawings and paintings.

Jill Brugler's colorful and playful "Stream" exhibit gives visual form to feeling using clay and steel. Michelle Legras Peltier's "My Work is My Prayer" portrays her personal vision of what she sees and experiences on treks through Nevada's mountains and deserts.
