Prep roundup: Dayton stays undefeated

The Dayton boys basketball team continued its hot start with a 64-27 win over ROP at home Tuesday night.

Dayton jumped out to a 15-5 lead after one and stretched that to a 35-14 lead at halftime. ROP failed to score in the fourth quarter.

Coach Jason Santos said the Dust Devils 2-3 zone frustrated ROP as it couldn't make a shot from the outside. Santos said the Dust Devils drew a number of charges as the ROP guards tried to penetrate.

"We shot it well," Santos said. "We really executed well. We had a lot of easy looks."

Dylan Taylor scored 16 points to lead the Dust Devils. Tyler Firestone added 15 points, Kyle Onstott added nine and Kage Walker chipped in seven.

"We were solid," Santos said of the team's play. "I am happy with this win, the thing with ROP is that you have to beat them early."

Santos said it seems year-after-year ROP starts peaking at the right time of the year.

Dayton now 5-0 and 1-0 in league plays a non conference at South Tahoe on Friday.

SIERRA LUTHERAN STARTS 0-2

The Sierra Lutheran boys' basketball team dropped its first two games of the season, losing by a point against Quincy, 48-47, on Thursday and falling 61-28 to Portola on Saturday.

SIERRA LUTHERAN BOUNCES BACK STRONG

While it may not show on the score book, the confidence the Sierra Lutheran girls basketball team gained from last weekend's Truckee tournament could translate into wins for the rest of the year.

The Falcons used that confidence, and a solid defense to defeat Excel Christian 30-13 Tuesday night.

Over the weekend the team lost two games to 2A schools North Tahoe (30-23) and Incline (37-30).

"(The tournament) built a lot of confidence and it showed (Tuesday)," said head coach Michael Nelson.

After holding a 10-3 halftime lead against Excel, the Falcons turned up the defensive pressure leading to 20 second half points in the win.

"They turned up the on the ball pressure and got into the passing lanes," Nelson said. "They turned defense into offense."

The Falcons were able to hold Excel's leading scorer scoreless thanks to the defense of Tiffany Patrick.

Patrick also had a solid night offensively scoring six points. Mckinze Tynes led the team with 10 points, 10 rebounds and six steals. Stephenie Nieri scored four points, but added eight rebounds.

Sierra Lutheran, 2-3, plays the South Tahoe JV team as part of the Whittell JV tournament on Thursday.
