Nobody Asked Us, But ... Lots going as the holidays draw near

The First United Methodist Church of Carson City is putting on "The Road to Bethlehem: A Living Nativity" this evening between 6:30-8 p.m. It's a drive-thru nativity scene beginning at 400 W. King St. It's a truly lovely gift to the community by the church. Be sure you go see it, and bring a can of non-perishable food to donate.

Often we forget that death is just as much a part of life as birth. This past week Josh Lynn, a wonderful young man, passed away at much too young an age. Mel Woodgate, of Warren Engine Co. No. 1 fame, completed his long and distinguished life ... as did Elizabeth Edwards, "grace under fire," of cancer. Our deepest sympathies to their families, and to our dear Karen. The late Cullen Moore, a syndicated writer and friend, wrote once that "no love is ever wasted." We hope all of you realize that their love still resides within your hearts.

Well, Carson City certainly has its "dumb criminal." In case you missed it, a man "dined and dashed" at the Nugget last week, but left his alternative sentencing papers on the table. Duh.

Karen and Charlie Abowd are hosting "Cookies with Santa" at Adele's on Dec. 18 to benefit the Ron Wood Foundation, from 12:30-2:30 p.m. Susane Tagayev is the "elf" who started it. It's $5 for adults, along with an unwrapped present, and kids are free. They'll have cookies, juice, tea and coffee to join Santa in a fun afternoon to help the foundation. Please come join the celebration.

Wild Horse Children's Theater is currently showing "Alice in Wonderland, Jr." at the Children's Museum through Dec. 18. Call 887-0438 for reservations and times. Very cute. And happy birthdays to Julie Harris and a belated one to Marge Drew (Walter says he can never forget her BD - it's on Pearl Harbor Day ... no excuses). Logan Galhaut is getting braces thanks to Dr. Frank Beglin. His parents are both excited that he's excited. Congratulations to Cheryl Macy on being named Nevada's teacher of the year.

Have been getting a lot of feedback on the Nevada-Boise State crowds. Seems the Nevada crowd can't take victory with good humor. Maybe it's time the University looks at its drinking policies, since we hear it was the drunk Nevada fans that were causing the trouble. Whatever happened to good sportsmanship?

We want to wish John Procaccini success with his future plans after leaving the Brewery Arts Center, and welcome John Shelton, who will succeed him. Both of them have a great feel for the arts in Carson City.

From Terry Beauchamp off the Internet: "At Christmas, the children brought gifts for their teacher. The florist's son brought a bouquet of flowers. The candy store owner's daughter gave the teacher candy. Then the liquor store owner's son brought up a big, heavy box. The teacher lifted it up and noticed that it was leaking a little bit. She touched a drop of the liquid and tasted it. 'Is it wine?' she guessed. 'No,' the boy replied. 'Champagne?' 'No,' said the little boy. 'It's a puppy.'" Merry Christmas.
