Winter Safety Day in Alpine County

Winter Safety Day is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 20 on Blue Lakes Road at Hope Valley Sno-park in Alpine County.

Classes, lasting just over an hour each, focus on trip preparation, avalanche awareness, hypothermia and other hazards faced by winter recreationists. Classes are designed for all backcountry users. Certified instructors will give an overview of skills necessary to enjoy winter recreation safely.

Agency participation includes California Sno-Park, California Division of Fish and Game, Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, Alpine County and local search and rescue groups.

Parking is very limited and carpooling is strongly encouraged.

This event will take place outside in the winter environment regardless of weather. Prepare accordingly. Dress in layers. Bring snacks, lunch and something to drink. Information, info@hopevalleyca.com.

Valentine's Day at Squaw Valley

If you're wondering what to do this Valentine's Day that would be a little different, consider a visit to Squaw Valley, where they are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 1960 Olympics.

Skiers, riders, and lovers alike can make this Valentine's Day memorable with amazing conditions and heartfelt specials.

Squaw is hosting a day-long scavenger hunt, a snowshoe tour for fun-loving singles and a romantic High Camp dinner package for couples.

Ice bar opens Squaw Valley

Squaw Valley USA and Stoli Vodka team up to bring the renowned Ice Bar at High Camp back to Squaw Valley for the second year. Guests can ride the Cable Car to High Camp at 8,200 feet to experience Lake Tahoe's coldest hot spot.

The Stoli Ice Bar is an outdoor bar made entirely out of ice, serving ice cold beer, barbeque items and specialty winter cocktails. The bar will be open during apres ski hours, weather permitting, for as long as the ice lasts.

The grand opening of the Stoli Ice Bar is 4-9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6 at High Camp.
