WNC softball opens 1-5

Western Nevada College's softball team notched its first win of the season to end a difficult weekend which saw the second-year program go 1-5.

WNC fell to Yavapai 12-2, then stumbled against Arizona Western College 7-1, Central Arizona College 7-4, South Mountain College, 8-1 and Pima Community College 9-1 before shutting out Gateway College 12-0.

First-year WNC coach Leah Wentworth said her team performed well despite the losses.

"There were a lot of positives," she said. "These are year-round teams that have been practicing outside.

"There were things we needed to work on, defensively, and we were putting the ball in play. I feel good about where we started and where we are going."

Against Gateway College of Phoenix, the Wildcats found their stride with 15 hits.

Alissa Rampa went 3-for-3 including a triple and RBI, and also scored two runs; Paige Savage went 2-for-3 and scored three runs; Kelsie Fahr and Lisa Senko each went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI, Elisa Dawson went 2-for-3, Alicia Merrell went 1-for-2 with an RBI and one run, Ashley Williams went 1-for-3 with an RBI double; and Ashley Hall went 1-3.

"Finally, everything came together," Wentworth said. "We looked like the Wildcats I knew we were." Every player in the lineup had at least one hit, and Elisa Dawson pitched a complete game."

The Wildcats, 1-5, will head for St. George, Utah next week for doubleheaders against Salt Lake Community College (Feb. 10-11) and Colorado Northwestern Community College (Feb. 12-13).

GIRLS

VIRGINIA CITY 51, INCLINE 49

VIRGINIA CITY - Jessi Bailey knocked in two free throws with 30 seconds left to give the Muckers a four-point lead and they held on for their second win of the season over Incline in a non-league game Wednesday night.

"It was a good game," said VC coach Todd Hess. "I don't think we played that well. They have a good squad."

Gigi Glogovac led VC with 15 points and Taylor Parsons added 13. Kelly Cherry led Incline with 14, including two 3-pointers. Incline hit six 3-pointers on the night.

Datyon 56, Whittell 12

The Dust Devils rolled over the undermaned Warriors in a non-league match.

Erika Garcia led the Dust Devils with 14 points, while Kathy Arias scored 11 and Ari Ruybal added nine.

Whittell has lost two starters this season due to anterior cruciate ligament injuries.

Dayton returns to league play at Truckee on Friday.

Junior varsity

CARSON 44, DAMONTE 21

The Senator JV team improved its record to 20-2 and 11-0 in league with a victory over Damonte Ranch in Carson Tuesday night,

Kaitlyn Holmes and Kenzie Price led the scoring with eight points apiece.

BOYS

YERINGTON 72, TRUCKEE 55

Burke Bristol scored 21 points and Tyler Crowl added 18 to lead Yerington to a 72-55 win in Northern 3A boys action Wednesday.

Taran Wiliams scored 13 for the Lions. James Depew led Truckee with 26.

Junior Varsity

CARSON 47, DAMONTE 37

Carson High's JV boys basketball team topped Damonte Ranch 47-37 to run its league record to 9-2.

Matt Nolan led the offense with 14 points, Ty Keefer had 13, Chance Quilling nine and Tommy Champion five.

SKiing

Carson girls split, boys drop 2

The Senators fell 87-48 to Reno, but rebounded with a 119-46 win over Sage Ridge in the girls' giant slolom competition at Mt. Rose.

Katherine Fulwider placed second and the loss and was first in the win over Sage Ridge. Teammate Camilla Jakobsen came in third in the win.

The boys fell 82-73 to Reno and 79-76 to Sage Ridge but Skylar Van Rensselar placed first in both.

The ski team will compete in an interleague meet Monday at Mt. Rose.
