RENO (AP) - The U.S. Bureau of Land Management is seeking public comment on the proposed roundup of about 1,800 wild horses from the range north of Reno.
Agency spokesman Jeff Fontana said the roundup in the 800,000-acre Twin Peaks Herd Management Area is tentatively set for August and September.
About half of the area is in Washoe County and half is in Lassen County, Calif.
BLM officials say the area's current population of about 2,300 horses is causing "ongoing resource damage," and the range can only support from 448 to 758 mustangs.
Under the proposal, most mares left on the range would be treated with a birth control drug effective for one to two years.
The agency is accepting public comments on the roundup through March 5 at its Eagle Lake Field Office in Susanville, Calif.
