Senator Square: Carson-Douglas rivalry continues to benefit Haiti

Carson High School will be hosting the state Speech and Debate tournament March 19-20. We would like to thank Grandma Hattie's, B'sghetti's, Taco Bell and In-N-Out Burger in advance for their support in providing food for the competition.

Congratulations to Carson High for placing fifth in the United States Department of Energy's Science Bowl Competition in Las Vegas on Jan. 30.

Subject matter included physics, astronomy, chemistry, biology, earth science, math and general science.

Team members included Merrill Asp, Andrew Jones, Jasmine Bean, Tim Dotson and Shruti Arun. Carson High also was awarded $500.

CHS Alumni Night will be held at the Morse Burley Gymnasium on Friday. It will be the biggest rivalry of the year between Carson and Douglas.

The varsity girls game begins at 5:15 and the varsity boys tipoff is at 7 p.m.

We welcome and invite all CHS alumni to join the evening's events. Raffles, contests, prizes and treats will be available for the night.

CHS Leadership and Douglas High Leadership will challenge their respective schools to a fundraising competition for Haiti this week.

The schools will work within their schools and communities to raise money for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. The winning school will be announced that night at the game.

Dan Zan Ryu Jujitsu: Stefani Decker and Cole Bates promoted to Yon Kyu - blue belt.

Chris Johnson and Darian Sheldon were promoted to Go Kyu - green belt.

Ana Arellano, Yubrini Chicas, Melissa McGuire, Taylor Nakamoto, Billy Vanroy and Dominik Vogt were promoted to Roku Kyu - orange belt.

The Carson baseball team is hosting its second annual poker tournament at the Plaza Hotel Conference Center from 6-10 p.m. Feb. 20.

It costs $20 for tickets, which includes appetizers. Poker buy-in is $40. There will be a silent auction and raffle prizes as well. You must be over 21.

Tickets must be picked up at the athletic office as door sales will not be available.
