VC boys upset Hawthorne

VIRGINIA CITY - Virginia City outscored Hawthorne 23-5 in the third quarter to knock off conference leader Hawthorne 68-64 in a Northern 1A game boys basketball game Saturday night.

Kurt Lynch scored eight of his 17 in that stretch while Cody Burrell had seven in that span.

Hunter Redman was the top scorer with 18.

Virginia City is 10-3 in league and 15-7 overall. Currently the Muckers are in third place behind Smith Valley and Hawthorne.

GIRLS

VIRGINIA CITY 73, HAWTHORNE 23

VIRGINIA CITY - Alexa Ballinger scored 20 points to lead Virginia City to an easy win over Hawthorne.

Jessi Bailey chipped in with 17 points and Gigi Glogovac added 12 in limited playing time.

Virginai City is 10-0 in league and 22-0 overall.

JC BASEBALL

WNC 5-5, PIMA COLLEGE 3-2

LAS VEGAS - Western nevada College's baseball team improved to 4-2 with a doubleheader sweep of Pima College Friday at UNLV.

Saturday's action was rained out.

WNC led 4-0 after seven, but Pima cut the deficit to 4-3 with two runs off reliever Kyle DiMartino, who failed to get an out. WNC scored one in the eight to wrap it up.

Jake Waardenburg threw 6.1 innings in the opener to pick up the win. He alowed just one run. Kramer Champlin picked up the save with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief.

Kyle Conwell collected two hits for WNC, while Andrew Garcia and Jay Skilton added a hit each.

In the nightcap, Tim Peterson went 6.1 innings to pick up the win. Jeff Barto went 2,2 innings in relief.

Conwell went 3-for-3 and Skilton went 3-for-4 for WNC. Eric Maupin and Trevor Goff had a hit each.
