The Census Bureau's ongoing American Community Survey, a packet consisting of more 60 questions asking such things as the names and ages of the people living in your home and what time you leave for work, is mandatory, according to Kathy Lacy, regional director for the Denver Regional Office for the Census Bureau, which covers Nevada. A story which ran in Saturday's paper suggested it was voluntary.
Lacy said anyone receiving the packet and failing to complete it and return it could be fined between $100 and $5,000 by the Department of Justice.
"It is a mandatory survey but I like to think we are pleasantly persistent, there won't be any fines," she said. "Technically we could fine people, but we never have. We really do count on people understanding it's important and counting on their willingness to participate."
Response to this and other Census surveys is required by law. The survey, addressed to an address and not a particular person, is sent out to about 250,000 U.S. homes each month and is part of the 2010 Census.
