The Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company presents "Opening Night on Broadway," a collection of music from all the hottest shows,in three performances Feb. 12-14, at Carson City Community Center.

Now in its 20th year, the company is one of the largest regional theater companies in Nevada, operating through the performing arts program of Western Nevada College.

"We started in 1990 as a children's theater company and within two years had grown into what we are today," said Stephanie Arigotti, professor of music at Western Nevada College and artistic director for WNMTC. "We draw great talent and I know I need to keep up the quality of the shows in order to keep fantastic people."

WNMTC productions in fact, are so in demand that performers pay a college credit to participate, and receive the second credit on scholarship, a testament to the level of professionalism that goes into each production.

In this performance, the audience will enjoy a revue of musical hits "from all the hottest Broadway shows, such as "Mama Mia," "Jersey Boys," "Les Miserables," "Hairspray" and others," Arigotti said.

While presented in concert form, the costumes and dance moves are also delightful.

"We have a powerhouse cast, with remarkable talent - as good as what I see on Broadway," Arigotti said.

"They have all had turns being the lead and getting to step into the spotlight since many of them have been with us (since the beginning)," she said. "With 'Broadway' we've been able to group them and let all of them shine, and they are having so much fun."

"Broadway" is the 83rd show presented by WNMTC and is expected to play to sold out audiences, even during the rough economy.

"We have managed to hold it together and I have to thank our audiences for that," Arigotti said. "We have very loyal audiences with people traveling from as far away as San Jose, (Calif.) and even planning family reunions around the shows."

Arigotti said the theater company has drawn as many as 6,000 people for its performances.

"We have been very well appreciated and supported by our community and our audiences, and I think that comes from choosing solid material, having amazing performers and the fact that I hire a live orchestra," she said.

"Broadway" is a great way to share this Valentine's weekend. Performances take place at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12 and Saturday, Feb 13 and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 14 at the Carson City Community Center, corner of Roop and Williams streets.
