The Carson City Sheriff's Department is taking applications for residents interested in learning more about the department's operations.

The Citizen's Academy will be held from 6-9 p.m. Wednesdays starting March 3 through April 28 in the Ormsby Room of the Carson City Sheriff's Department, 911 E. Musser St.

The Academy explains the Sheriff's Department's operations as well as the importance of "community policing," said volunteer coordinator Ken Smith.

Participants will learn about patrol operations, arrest procedures, defensive tactics and the graffiti and gang units.

The academy is open to adults 18 or older with a preference given to Carson City residents, local merchants and their employees. The academy may be of particular interest to senior citizens, said Smith. The application deadline is Feb. 23. There is no charge for the classes, but due to the limited number of openings some applications may be denied.

For information or to request an application, call Smith at 775-887-2020 ext. 41932 or visit the Musser Street office.
