Valentine's Day reception at BAC

Love is in the air at the Brewery Arts Center. The Artisan Cafe will host a Valentine's Day event from 3-6 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free.

The reception features the work of local artists and jewelry makers. Many of the artists will be on hand to talk about their work.

Local musical favorites Martin & Vargas will entertain guests with their unique "Nuevo Flamenco" music. Guests may also enjoy a tasty dessert bar provided by the Artisan Cafe.

The Brewery Arts Center is located at 449 W. King St. in Carson City.

NARFE meeting Tuesday morning

National Active and Retired Federal Employees Chapter 1329 will meet Tuesday at Grandma Hattie's on South Carson Street. Optional lunch off the menu begins at 11:30 a.m. and the business meeting follows at noon.

Dayton dog park advocates to meet

Friends of the Dayton Valley Dog Park will meet 6-7:30 p.m. Friday at the Dayton Valley Library at 321 Old Dayton Valley Road.

This will be an open board meeting with a progress report about efforts to create a dog-friendly park in Dayton.

Anyone interested in a dog park are welcome to attend.

Bereavement group meets Wednesday

The Memory Dish Bereavement Group, organized by Barton Health, meets the fourth Wednesday of each month in the Carson Valley Medical Center Administration Building, on the second floor. The next meeting is Wednesday.

Making and sharing a favorite dish that reminds you of a lost loved one can help revive special memories and can help relieve some of the loss felt when faced with a large hole in your life. It is not necessary to share a favorite dish with the Memory Dish Bereavement Group, but it is encouraged.

Trained facilitators and group counselors will be in attendance.

There is no cost to attend the group but it is helpful for facilitators to know who is coming. Call 775-782-1510 for more information.

Carson City Rotary Club is helping to raise awareness for a high-protein food drive for Friends In Service Helping.

The food is needed for the elderly and the very young. Food items needed are things such as infant formula, spaghetti, beef stew, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter, beans, canned tuna and canned chicken.

Rotary Club members will have bins for dropoff in various businesses throughout town, or people can donate directly to FISH on East Long Street.

The program is ongoing, but the Rotary awareness participation will continue through February.

Women in History nominations sought

"Douglas County Women: Preserving Their Legacy for the Future," was the theme chosen for the Douglas County Historical Society's 10th Annual Women's History Remembering Project.

This has been a very successful project in the preservation of Douglas County history and is held in March to celebrate National Women in History month.

The historical society is asking for nominations of women who have made a significant historical contribution to the quality of life in Douglas County. The woman nominated, living or deceased, must live or have lived in Douglas County.

Women will be chosen from the nominees at the discretion of the society's WHRP committee and honored at a public reception on March 20.

Nominating packets may be picked up at the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center. To have a packet mailed, call the society office at 782-2555 or Helen Chappell at 721-7979.

Deadline to submit a nominee is 4 p.m., March 5.
