(AP) - Nevada lawmakers will hold town hall meetings at both ends of the state today to hear comments from the public on how to handle the state's $881 million budget shortfall.

The meetings will be held at the Grant Sawyer State Office Building in Las Vegas and City Hall in Reno. Both start at 9 a.m. and will run through midday.

The Legislature's Interim Finance Committee has been holding meetings in advance of a Feb. 23 special legislative session called by Gov. Jim Gibbons.

The governor has proposed roughly 10 percent budget cuts of state agencies, including public schools and higher education.

In a speech Monday, Gibbons said about 234 state workers would be laid off, but that number doesn't include thousands of teachers who could lose their jobs.
