Nash takes Carson's 3-point mark

Whitney Nash became Carson High's new single-season leader for 3-point shooting last week.

Nash, a junior, has 49 3-pointers this year, eclipsing Gina Bianchi's record of 45 set last season. She'll have a chance to get into the 50s when the Senators take on Reed in Sparks on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.

"It was one of my goals (to get the record) this year," Nash said after Carson's win over Douglas on Friday night. "I've dreamt of doing something that would get me noticed.

"I don't think Gina knows. If she does, she hasn't said anything. I've always been pretty good from the outside. I'm more confident shooting from the outside."

Nash hits around 40 percent of her 3-point attempts, which is an impressive stat.

"That was my goal to be around 50 percent," she said.

Nash has been a bit one-dimensional at times. She knows that she needs to take the ball to the basket more often and she knows that she needs to use her right hand more.

"I know I have the skill," she said. "I practice it all the time. I don't have as much confidence doing that.

"I try to work on it (my right hand) during practice. When I get into a game. I just think about that game. When I look at film I realize I didn't use my right hand at all."

Former Carson High basketball star Nicole Scott is enjoying a productive season at Eastern Washington University, a member of the Big Sky Conference.

Scott, a 6-foot-1 senior, is averaging 8.7 points and 4.5 rebounds per contest. She is a key reason why EWU got off to a 7-0 start this season and are currently 15-8.

RPI freshman Adam Updegrove, a member of the Rensselaer men's swimming and diving team has performed well in the first four meets of the season.

He recorded a second-place finish in 3-meter diving and a fourth-place finish in 1-meter diving in a dual-meet win over Skidmore College.

Former Carson High track and field star Mike Arnold cleared an NCAA provisional qualifying height of 5.22 meters (17-01.5) in the pole vault recently at the Mountain States Games.

Arnold is a sophomore at Idaho State University.

I was certainly happy to see Tim Lincecum and the Giants settle on a deal before his case went to arbitration. Two years for $23 million is a lot of money, but the skinny right-hander, barring injury, will be worth every penny.

The sides settled on less than what Lincecum wanted, and hopefully they can re-work that contract and get him signed for five or six more years. I would imagine if he has another Cy Young season that the Giants might be willing to re-work the contract.
