For the second year in a row, Carson High's girls basketball team will travel to Reed on Wednesay (7 p.m. tip-off) for the opening round of the Northern 4A regional playoffs.
Last year, Carson took a 10-point lead into the fourth quarter, but came out on the short end by four points.
Carson coach Todd Ackerman said rebounding is the No. 1 thing his team has been working on. He also wants to see his team handle the ball better.
"We need to box out better," Ackerman said. "That will be the key. We can't give them second and third shots.
"We have a tendency to hang on to the ball too long which allows the defense to get to us. We'll see if it improves. I know they are trying to make things happen."
Ackerman spent Monday working against half-court pressure which he expects to see. He also expects to see a lot of zone.
"We have a tendency to be a little impatient against zone defenses and not look real hard for each other," Ackerman said.
Ackerman expects to start Kate Schulz in the middle, as Tiana McAllister-Daggs is out with a knee injury. When the Senators are in a man defense, expect to see Schulz matched up with Danielle Peacon, who played her freshman year at Carson before transferring to Reed.
The Raiders also have a talented guard in Micah Walker and a solid front-line player in Honour Knudsen, who scored 18 on Saturday against Spanish Springs.
"I'm excited. It's at home. Carson was our first-round opponent last year and they gave us a good game," Reed girls basketball coach Sara Schopper told the Sparks Tribune earlier this week. "We went out and watched them last Friday because I wanted my girls to stay focused. I think we have more size than them. If Honour and Micah can have a good game inside, we'll be right there."
