MINDEN - Douglas County sheriff's Capt. Mike Biaggini has lost his battle with colon cancer.

The sheriff's office says Biaggini died Wednesday morning at his home in Gardnerville. He was 55.

Biaggini began his career with the sheriff's office in 1981 and worked in every division, serving as county coroner, defense tactics trainer, sharpshooter, professional standards leader and investigator.

He graduated in 1997 from the FBI academy in Quantico, Va.

Biaggini retired from the sheriff's office in January, and was honored by more than 300 friends and co-workers at a Jan. 30 retirement party.
