CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - The Legislature's Interim Finance Committee meets again today to discuss Gov. Jim Gibbons' proposals to close an $880 million budget gap.
Thursday's hearing in Carson City will be followed by another one on Monday, the day before lawmakers are set to convene in special session to tackle the state's financial crisis.
Gibbons is asking for roughly 10 percent budget cuts from most state agencies. He also is proposing limiting deductions taken by the mining industry to raise $50 million over the current two-year budget cycle, and taking about $90 million from reserve accounts to prop up the general fund.
He's also proposed closing a prison in Carson City, laying off 227 employees, increasing worker furloughs and implementing shorter work weeks for some agencies.
