Eight local groups recommended for block grants by supervisors

The Carson City Board of Supervisors gave preliminary approval Thursday on priorities for awarding $565,500 in Community Development Block Grants.

Four proposals for public services and seven for public improvements were received, totaling more than $1 million in requests. A five-member work group then interviewed applicants and used a detailed ranking system to recommend funding to supervisors.

The following list of funding proposals was approved:

• Ron Wood Family Resource Center, $47,500, for Reach Up, a comprehensive mental health treatment and care management program.

• Court Appointed Special Advocates, $11,000, for building upon the Foster Kids Closet project.

• RSVP Home Companion Respite Care Program, $7,500, for in-home respite care and caregiver support.

• Partnership Carson City, $26,322, for Partnership and Latino Services building upgrade.

• Friends In Service Helping, $43,300, for repairs and improvements.

• Carson City Public Works, $121,378, for Americans with Disabilities Act improvements to Long Street.

• Carson City Parks and Recreation, $127,000, for remediation of community center's handicapped access barriers.

• Sierra Family Health Center, $181,500, for a patient waiting area and children's play area.

The following groups did not receive recommendation for CDBG funding :

• Brewery Arts Center, for mobile art services.

• Community Greenhouse and Garden, for a sustainable greenhouse at Carson High School.

• Carson City Office of Business Development, for a business incubator.

After a 30-day public comment period, supervisors will take final action on the plan, then forward the proposals to the Housing and Urban Development office for consideration.

In other business Thursday, supervisors approved the conceptual design concepts for Carson City's Freeway Landscape Project, "History in Motion," which includes three interchanges and three grade separations. In the motion, they directed staff to continue to work on landscaping for the College Parkway interchange.
