Gov. Jim Gibbons has revised his proposed cuts to public schools, saying money has been found to avoid an additional 1.75 percent reduction in teacher salaries.
But Gibbons spokesman Daniel Burns says schools and most other state agencies still race roughly 10 percent cuts. For K-12, that amounts to about $166 million.
School administrators say the cuts could mean thousands of teacher layoffs, and Democratic lawmakers have been trying to find addditional money for education.
Nevada's general fund relies heavily on sales and casino taxes, revenue sources that have taken big hits in the global recession.
The state faces a $900 million budget shortfall and the Legislature will convene in special session Tuesday to deal with the fiscal crisis.
