SACRAMENTO (AP) - California Attorney General Jerry Brown is asking the state's seven largest health insurance companies to turn over documents about their premiums and claims.

Brown says he's investigating whether the companies may be unjustly raising premiums and denying payment for legitimate insurance claims.

The insurers include Anthem Blue Cross, which has come under fire for a proposed rate hike of up to 39 percent. Anthem spokeswoman Peggy Hinz declined to comment Thursday, saying the company hasn't yet received a subpoena.
