Rotary raises funds for Haiti relief

The Noon Rotary Club of Carson City raised $2,400 to assist the victims of the 7.2 earthquake that struck Haiti on Jan. 12. The funds will go toward purchasing "shelter boxes." The shelter and equipment kits will provide basic household needs for up to 10 people. They are designed to offer a rapid deployment of critical items needed in most major disaster situations.

Typically, each shelter box being sent to Haiti contains a 10-person tent, a wood or multi-fuel stove, sturdy cooking and eating utensils, basic tools (axe and hoe), water storage jugs and a children's packet.

The boxes cost $800 each and Rotary clubs in Northern Nevada and northeastern California (Rotary District 5190) are doing their part by raising funds to buy the boxes.

Scott Dockery, president of the Carson City Noon Rotary Club stated, "We are proud to do our part to help the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. This is just another example of how Rotary International continues to help save lives around the world. We appreciate the members of the Carson City community who continue to support Rotary fundraising events that make relief efforts such as this one possible.
