130 YEARS AGO

Gillhooly's Faux Pax: Gillhooly, a barkeeper at the Ormsby House, conceived the idea of tying an oil can to the tail of a dog. He caught the dog, holded him up in the pool room and found a can with a hole at one end. In the can, he was to put rocks, to facilitate the dog running down the street. He then took the can up and ran his fingers through the hole. He dragged the dog out of the room and through bar, but the dog tripped him up, with Gillhooly falling on the can and cutting him up to the point where he now wears a sling. The dog now carries his tail free and unencumbered.

100 YEARS AGO

Last night at about 10 o'clock the school bell rang. At every case we anticipated a fire alarm, but not this time. The ringing of the bell was at the hands of some young men, full of life following the school play that evening. We suggest the school trustees stop this practice at once.

70 YEARS AGO

Desert sunflowers are now in full bloom in Death Valley and are described as "incredibly beautiful." Between Furnace Creek and Sand Dunes are solid carpets of blooming yellow and green.

50 YEARS AGO

Governor Grant Sawyer is expected to attend a ceremony in Genoa in which a Norwegian Winter Olympics team will place a plaque on the grave of Snowshoe Thompson.

20 Years Ago

Carson City must improve Arrowhead Drive or give back some $150,000 to the federal government. In a controversial investigation by the Economic Development Administration from 26 years ago, the street must be upgraded to truck standards, or lose funding.
