Happy senior tours head to Lake Tahoe

Reservations are being accepted now for the Carson City Senior Citizens monthly bus trip.

The January tour will head to Harvey's/Harrah's, South Lake Tahoe, on Tuesday, Jan. 12. The bus will load at 7:45 a.m., in the east parking lot of the senior center. It will depart at 8:15 a.m. sharp and return to the center at 4 p.m.

Swing dance class starts tonight

High Sierra Swing Dance Club, as a co-production with Brewery Arts Center, presents a six-week series of dance lessons on Wednesdays starting Jan. 6 at the BAC Grand Ballroom, 449 W. King St., Carson City.

Classes for beginners and those with less than six months dance experience are 6-7:30 p.m.; West Coast Swing Beyond Basics is 7:30-9 p.m. No partner is necessary.

Shelf-stable meal distribution for seniors

The Carson City Senior Citizens Center will distribute shelf-stable meals for seniors at 12:30-3:30 p.m. Thursday at the senior center at 911 Beverly Drive east entrance.

The center also has cases of Ensure to distribute to seniors who are nutritionally compromised.

The meal distribution is for seniors 60 years and older, and their spouses. Each person can receive on distribution of 10 shelf-stable meals, which do not require refrigeration and can be eaten with or without heating.

Those not already registered at the Carson City Senior Citizens Center may be asked to fill out a simple form.

The meals, which can be stored in cabinets without refrigeration for two years and do not have to be heated (but taste better hot), were purchased with a grant from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Meals include chicken and dumplings, spaghetti and meatballs, and beef stew, plus a beverage and dessert.

The meals will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis while the supply lasts.

Bald eagles and other birds of prey

Nancy Santos, a local birding expert and president of the Friends of Silver Saddle Ranch, will present a PowerPoint slide show at

9 a.m. Saturday on bald eagles and other birds of prey that can be observed in the local area at this time of the year. The presentation will take place in the "Red House" at the ranch.

The program is in anticipation of the upcoming Carson Valley Eagles and Agriculture event Feb. 19 - 21.

After the presentation, those who wish can join Santos and search Silver Saddle Ranch and the nearby Carson River for bald eagles and other raptors to become familiar with the raptors in our area. Bringing a pair of binoculars will be helpful but not essential.

Set design workshop at BAC on Saturday

The Brewery Arts Center will present a set-design workshop 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9 in the BAC Performance Hall at 511 W. King St.

The course will be taught by John Procaccini and Amber Stinebrink, who have extensive experience in the set-design and entertainment-production field. Workshop attendees will learn everything about set design and construction from start-to-finish including how to set up a base camp to save valuable time on the set.

The set design workshop is part of a full suite of filmmaking workshops and courses being offered at the Brewery Arts Center as part of the "Northern Nevada Film Factory," a filmmakers and animators club.

Artists reception tonight at Backseat

Backseat Gallery will host an artist's reception at 5-

7 p.m. tonight for January featured artist Howard Friedman.

Friedman paints with a palette knife, applying many layers that stress his love of color. This method creates a three-dimensional appearance to his work.

The Backseat Gallery is located inside Comma Coffee in Carson City's historic downtown district at 312 S. Carson St., across from the state legislature. The exhibit is free. Appetizers will be served at the reception and beer and wine will be available for purchase.
