A major city project to widen Roop Street between Beverly and Robinson streets began this week and will continue for much of the year.
When complete, Roop will have two through lanes in each direction, upgraded utilities, enhanced bicycle and pedestrian accommodations and improved public transit stops.
The Carson City Regional Transportation Commission is expected to award a contract to widen the road in February, but utility work has already begun. There will be minor traffic impacts on Roop between William and Washington streets until Jan. 25, when work will shift to the north of William Street.
Roop will be closed between William and Beverly from Jan. 25 through November. Access to businesses will remain available from cross streets. Cross traffic at Long and Corbett streets will be allowed.
Additionally, Roop Street will be closed from William to Robinson streets for about two months sometime during the summer.
During construction, the primary alternative route will be North Stewart Street - including the recently completed North Stewart Street extension.
The Jump Around Carson transit system also will be affected. Passengers can obtain more information by visiting www.rideJAC.com or calling 841-7433.
