Empire Ranch takings sign-ups

Empire Ranch Senior Men's Golf Club is now taking applications for the 2010 season.

The season begins on March 10 and continues with tournaments every Wednesday morning through Oct. 27. A total of 26 tournaments will be played at Empire Ranch and eight will be played at other area courses.

All tournaments are handicapped and flighted so all golfers have a chance to win prize money. Individual stroke play, scrambles, better ball, best ball and Stableford are the types of tournaments schedules.

Applications are available at the Empire Ranch pro shop.

The membership fee is $40, which includes Northern Nevada Golf Association membership. You must 60 or older to sign up.

Junior, adult lessons

at Empire Ranch

Empire Ranch Adult and junior golf lessons are now available at Empire Ranch golf course.

The Junior Golf Academy is aimed at junior golfers with the desire to reach their full potential as golfers.

There is six hours a week of instruction with in depth training in all aspects of the game. Two hours per session Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-5:30 p.m. For more information.

Adults interested in improving their game or just taking up the game for fun can sign up for six hours of instruction in 90-minute increments.

Class No. 1 is Mondays from 5:30 to 7 p.m. starting March 29 and Class No. 2 is on Wednesdays from 5:30 to 7 p.m. starting March 31.

Cornbread & Whiskey has a 15-point lead over Do Work and Scratch Masters in Comstock Division 63 of the American Poolplayers Association.

Cornbread & Whiskey has 165 points, Do Work and Scratch Masters are at 150.

Frederick Osterhagen of Scratch Masters leads the 4-5 tier with 12 points, while Daniel McRae is second with 11. Don Allred, also of Scratch Masters leads the 6-9 tier with seven points and Bill Howard of Cornbread & Whiskey is next with six. Richard Baker of Scratch Masters leads the 1-3 tier with six points, while George Vick is next with four.

There is a five-way tie for first place in the Mosconi 231 Division between the Big Dogs, Rack Fink, Role Models, Support Rackless Habits and Twisted Attitudes.

Casey Richards of Support Rackless Habits leads the 4-5 tier with six points and Austin Matthews (Jerry's Kids), Kim Dandos (Twisted Attitudes) and Joshua Stewart (AltF4) are second with five points. Allred of Scratch Masters leads the 6-7 tier with six points and Mark Fitzsimmons of Cues Yer Daddy is next with five. Rack Fink's Tadd Patchen leads the 2-3 tier with six points and Jason Agnew of SRH is next with five.

Eagle Valley wins

Eagle Valley Middle School's seventh-grade volleyball team won two matches last week to improve to 3-0.

Eagle Valley beat Pau Wa Lu 11-25, 25-15, 15-6 and also topped South Tahoe 25-12 and 25-13.

In the win over Pau Wa Lu, Erica Gallegos served eight points, including two aces and had two kills. Lindsay Hettrick served up five points, including an ace, and Christina Young served up three aces. Against South Tahoe, Gallegos had 10 service points, including two aces, and Chantal Torrez added eight service points. Michelle Perry contributed three kills.

Carson Valley spikes

Carson Valley Middle School's seventh-grade volleyball team topped Alder Creek and Carson Middle School last week.

CVMS topped Alder Creek 25-19 and 25-16 as Gabby Vega and Shayla Gransbery led the way with six service points apiece. Alexis Von Schottenstein had 16 service points and Vega had six service points against Carson Middle in a 25-14, 20-25 and 15-8 win.

Carson Valley's eighth-grade squad split two matches, losing to Alder Creek 18-25, 25-17 and 14-16. Anna Leukemberry led Carson Valley with eight service points and Maddie Strauss added seven. Shelby Van Winkle added four service points, five assists and four kills. In the 25-22, 10-25 and 16-14 win over Carson Middle, Van Winkle had eight service points and Emily Gosselin added four service points.

Baker is perfect

at Gold Dust West

Bill Baker rolled a perfect 300 game at Gold Dust West Bowling Center on Jan. 11 in the Monday Men's Senior Trio League.

Allen DeYoung rolled a 299 on Jan. 18 while Jim Follis bowled a 279.

On Jan. 14, James Ross finished with a 298 and Sam McDuffy a 279.

Senators to host baseball clinic

The Carson High School baseball team is hosting a clinic on Saturday, Feb. 6 at the high school.

The cost is $25, which includes a T-shirt and a snack.

Carson to host spring sports sign-ups

The Carson High spring sports sign-ups are 5-6:30 p.m. Feb. 8 in the North Foyer.

Now is the time to get your athletic packet completed including physical if necessary.

Sports packets can be obtained online at

Sports packets will not be accepted after Feb. 22. See the athletic department for more details.

Carson baseball to host poker tourney

The Carson High baseball team is hosting its second annual Poker Tournament at the Plaza Hotel Conference Center from 6-10 p.m. Feb. 20.

It costs $20 for tickets, which includes appetizers. Poker buy-in is $40.

There will be a silent auction and raffle prizes as well. You must be older than 21.

Tickets must be picked up tickets at the athletic office as door sales will not be available.
