LAS VEGAS - Two people were arrested Tuesday outside the doors of a Las Vegas casino after police and news helicopters followed a stolen car for more than an hour as it sped through residential streets, busy intersections and freeways, police said.
The morning drive-time drama ended when the man and woman displayed a gun as they were confronted by a security guard in a walkway from the parking garage to the Suncoast Hotel & Casino several miles west of the Las Vegas Strip, police Officer Barbara Morgan said.
The two retreated back to the multistory parking structure, where police apprehended them, Morgan said.
"Male, female and gun in custody," the police spokeswoman said.
The chase played out live at dawn on local TV, with helicopters following the boxy white Toyota Scion. It sped through red lights and stop signs, wove around stopped vehicles, cut through parking lots, passed school buses and sometimes drove against traffic.
Morgan said police cars broke off the pursuit early and let a police helicopter follow the vehicle after a report that a silver van was burglarized about 5:30 a.m. in the parking lot of a bar in northwest Las Vegas.
News helicopters also followed the vehicle into the far northwest part of the city, then east to Interstate 15, south to U.S. 95 and west before the chase ended before 7 a.m. out of sight of news cameras on the second floor of the Suncoast parking structure in the Summerlin area.
The casino isn't far from the bar where the vehicle break-in was reported.
The man and woman were not immediately identified. Morgan said they would probably face assault with a deadly weapon, auto burglary and felony evading arrest charges, along with multiple traffic offenses.
The Scion also was reported stolen, Morgan said.
