Brewery Arts Center workshop helps filmmakers with set design

Eighteen-year-old Luke Holden, a Carson High School student who is an expert in animation, is in the midst of making his first film, "Gateway," a 20-minute production set for release sometime in May.

Holden, a member of the Brewery Arts Center's club, the Northern Nevada Film Factory, for filmmakers and animators, was one of about 12 people who attended a set design workshop Saturday at the BAC.

The six-hour workshop was led by the BAC's executive director, John Procaccini, a 32-year entertainment production industry veteran and Amber Stinebrink, a professional set designer with clients such as 20th Century Fox, Sprint and Exxon Mobile.

For Holden, the workshop was a gold mine of information to help him with the set, which is now under construction in his garage for his film.

"This really helps me with the props and the things I have to build," Holden said - such as the portal in his film which leads the way into video games.

"He's our first filmmaker," said Donna Walden, a special projects consultant who heads up the Film Factory for the BAC. "We have a complete media center (at the Access Carson City TV Studio) complete with a green screen, 12 computers for editing, 12 cameras, sound and lighting. Luke wrote his own screenplay - it's on storyboard."

The filmmaking workshops are designed to give emerging filmmakers all the skills they need to produce films, Walden said.

There will be a screening for Holden's film at a future date at the BAC. It also will be shown at Carson High, and Holden will be sending it to a number of film festivals.

The Film Factory is a filmmakers' and animators' club. In addition to general filmmaking workshops, upcoming offerings for the club will include courses such as hair and makeup, music and scoring, wardrobe and costuming, and screenwriting.
