Douglas boys edge Damonte Ranch

MINDEN - The Douglas boys' basketball team was looking for some kind of spark heading into the fourth quarter Friday night. Any kind of spark.

They got it from an unlikely combo.

While Douglas regularly cycles in its entire roster to the game, usually in the first half, it was the designated second-team group - which hasn't seen a lot of time on the floor together during actual games - that came through.

"We call them our Black team," Douglas coach Corey Thacker said. "They're our "2s" and they're always in there banging around against each other during practice."

The unit, which includes starting center Jorey Scott, Kameron VanWinkle, Nick Maestretti, Jeremy Burkhart and Luis Pina-Duarte, erased a four-point Damonte Ranch lead late in the third quarter and ran up a 10-point lead to open the fourth.

The Tigers ended up needing every bit of that as they held on for a 70-67 win over Damonte Ranch.

"We were trying to find guys that would make some stops, that was the main thing," Thacker said. "They had a good spot at the end of the third quarter where they got us the tie.

"We went with them to start the fourth and they came out and really got it going. They were going up the line and keeping pressure at the spots we wanted. Our kids have worked hard as a group and that's how it breaks down. You put it on any group of guys on the roster out there and they can carry you through."

Trailing 41-37 with two minutes left in the third quarter, the Tigers clamped down defensively and didn't allow the Mustangs to score another point until 6:33 remained in the fourth.

Freshman Hunter Myers led the Tigers with 13 points and Downs had 10.

VC BOYS LOSE

VIRGINIA CITY - Smith Valley outscored Virginia City 22-11 in the third period and went on to an 81-70 victory over the Muckers on Friday, sweeping the season series.

Jordan Fletcher led Smith Valley with 33 points and Tony Castaneda added 20.

Hunter Redman led the Muckers with 25 points and Zach Shell added 24.

The loss dropped VC to 12-7 overall and 7-3 in league. The Muckers trail both Smith Valley and Hawthorne. VC hosts Hawthorne today at 5:30 p.m.

LADY MUCKERS WIN

VIRGINIA CITY - Gigi Glogovac scored 15 first quarter points in leading the Virginia City girls varsity basketball team to a 62-18 victory over Smith Valley on Friday.

Glogovac finished the game with 23 points for the Muckers. Jessica Bailey chipped in 14 and Taylor Parson added 11.

Virginia City improved to 18-2 and 8-2 in conference.

DAYTON GIRLS WIN

DAYTON - Dayton jumped to a 16-1 first-quarter lead and rolled to an easy 48-27 win over Sparks in a Northern 3A game Friday night.

Dayton is now 4-4 in league play.

"I don't know if this was our best game, but we played well," said DHS coach Shari Andreasen. "We played consistently and didn't let up on them."

Ariella Ruybal led Dayton with 16 points, 12 of those coming on four 3-pointers. kathy Arias added 11.

JV BOYS WIN TWO

Matt Galvan scored 15 points and Chance Quilling added 13 to lead Carson to a 63-41 win over Wooster on Friday.

Matt Nolan added nine and Carlos Carrillo eight for the Senators, who improved to 8-2 in league play.

On Tuesday, Carrillo scored 17 and Quilling added 16 in a 66-58 win over Bishop Manogue.

Nolan, Ty Keefer and Galvan all added eight points.

CARSON JV GIRLS WIN

The Carson High girls JV team extended its record to 18-2 Tuesday

with a 67-31 victory over Manogue.

The Senators played their usual tenacious defense and were led on offense by Emily

Collins and Megan Justice, who scored 10 points apiece.

CARSON FROSH WIN

The Carson High freshmen boys led the enitre way in a 61-52 win at Wooster.

The Senators led 20-11 after the first period, but Wooster hung tough, cutting the lead down to eight at the half and seven after three periods.

Rafe King led Carson, 17-1 and 10-0 in league, with 14 points. Sage Smith added 12 and Jay Lanuza chipped in 10.
