Warren Engine Company No. 1 hosts barbecue

Warren Engine Company No. 1 will host a barbecue fundraiser from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today, Sunday and Monday at the Wabuska Depot of the Nevada State Railroad Museum.

Hot dogs, hamburgers and cheeseburgers will be sold - which will include chips and a drink - for $5.

Pops concerts celebrate July 4

The Carson Chamber Singers will join forces with the Reno Philharmonic Chorus and Reno Philharmonic Orchestra in two Independence Day weekend concerts packed with patriotic music to celebrate the Fourth of July.

At 8 p.m. today, they will play at Bartley Ranch, 6000 Bartley Ranch Road, Reno. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for this free concert.

Celebrate the Fourth of July with Pops in the Park at Genoa's Mormon Station State Historic Park. Festivities run from 1-6 p.m.

The orchestra will be lead by Jason Altieri, the conductor of the Reno Philharmonic Youth Orchestras and the UNR orchestra.

Story time to be followed by

book signing

Mary Randall, author of "A Walk Through The Woods," will offer a story time and book signing July 11 at Borders Book Store, 911 Topsy Lane in north Douglas County.

Story time will be from

2-3 p.m., where Randall will read her book. This will be followed by a book signing until 4 p.m.

Senior Follies tickets on sale now

Tickets are on sale for Carson City's own Senior Follies 2010: "Seniors in Paree!"

The 13th annual fundraiser for all senior meal programs will take place at

7 p.m. Friday, July 30 and

2 p.m July 31 and Aug. 1 at the Bob Boldrick Theater in the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St.

Online repository of newspapers available

The Cooperative Libraries Automated Network (CLAN) invites people to discover Nevada's history through the newspapers of the times. Many of Nevada's historic newspapers are now available online.

These online newspapers are fully searchable. Readers can explore The Daily Territorial Enterprise from Jan. 1, 1881 through 1892, with additional papers added daily. The Reese River Reveille from May 23, 1863 through Dec. 31, 1887 also has daily additions. The White Pine News is complete from Jan. 1, 1801 through Dec. 12, 1906. The Wadsworth Dispatch has one year of newspapers from Jan. 4, 1893 to Dec. 30, 1893, and The Goodsprings Gazette has a limited number of newspapers published in 1916, 1917, 1918 and 1919.

Build a backyard bird feeder at Washoe Lake State Park

Nevada State Parks invites the public to learn how to make a bird feeder out of recycled plastic. Parks staff will be making and decorating bird feeders out of recycled plastic bottles at 10 a.m. July 10.

The program is suitable for ages 5 and older, and all materials will be provided. In honor of Nevada State Parks 75th anniversary, all children will receive a 75th anniversary memorabilia prize.

This program is limited to 15 participants. Call 687-4319 to reserve a space.

There is no charge for the program, but there is a $ 7 per vehicle park entry fee with a $2 discount for Nevada residents.

ESL tutor training to be offered

For those who want to make a difference and become part of the solution in breaking the language barrier, a free tutor training workshop in ESL (English as a Second Language) will be from

2-4 p.m. July 17 at Ron Wood Family Resource Center, 212 E. Winnie Lane (Salvation Army Thrift Store in Crossroads Shopping Center) off Highway 395.

Training and instructional material are provided at no charge and light snacks are served.

Commitment to tutor is

1-2 hours a week at flexible days/times.There are adult learners waiting for someone to help them to speak, read and write English.
