While the Fourth of July was generally greeted with fireworks and fun, please take a moment to remember Spc. Matthew Hannigan of Las Vegas, another Nevadan who has given his life in Afghanistan. Our deepest sympathy goes out to his family and friends.

'Tis the month of many birthdays, so happy b-days to Gene Butler, Jody Crews, Andy Harvey, H Bentley Hawley, Rett Jesse, Brad McCleary, Jerry Nielson, Kati Sherwood, Ralph Sifuentes, and that person, Maizie Harris Jesse (who encourages presents, flowers, gift certificates, new cars, trips abroad, lunches and dinners out ...'er, nothing pretentious, of course). May they all have a wonderful day.

A "friend" of ours called and said he'd invented a new salad: Chicken and watermelon (probably what he had left in his refrigerator). "It's not as good as it sounds."

Jean Darrow suggests you all try the China Bistro on South Carson Street (where Long John Silver's used to be). She says they have really good food and reasonable prices. They also have a drive-through window so it's really easy to have a taste.

Theresa Langford of Roadrunner fame in Dayton went on a "girls" vacation in Washington, where they were excited to see a production of "Footloose." They had gotten their tickets online, and had a GPS to direct them to the theater. When they arrived, they found out they were in front of a grade school in Seattle (we think that's where it was). Seems the "production" was comprised of little kids doing the play. They had a wonderful time anyway ... maybe more so because of the kiddies. Caveat emptor! (And have a sense of humor.)

Carolyn had breakfast last Sunday at the Gold Dust West with her "boyfriend" and his wife, and Ed and Jennie Cordisco. They had a great time. She also saw Jan and Jay Meierdierck the other day. If they would quit traveling, she would probably see them a lot more. But, it's nice to know they're having a good time.

The Brewery Arts Center will be presenting "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum," beginning at 7 p.m. Friday, July 16 in the Outdoor Amphitheater. Call 883-1976 for information, dates and prices (be sure you check the dates, since the website and flier don't agree). It is an hysterical musical, filled with out-loud laughs and fun.

Sports trivia: Bob Herzog sent us the following off the Internet: "The first testicular guard, the 'cup,' was used in hockey in 1874, and the first helmet was used in 1974. That means it only took men 100 years to realize their brain also was important."

Maizie got to take the 5 p.m. V&T train to V.C. on the Fourth, and was fortunate enough to see Sen. Harry Reid on the train, too. A very nice man, no matter what your politics. We got an extra treat and were taken to the Eureka siding (near the Carson River) and saw part of the new route that will eventually take people into east Carson City. If you haven't taken the trip as yet, you owe it to yourself to do so (and a little heads up: If you're going uphill, sit on the right side. If down, sit on the left, that way you really get to see the scenery). We also saw the resident wild horses wandering around. Neato.

It's really summer now, so stay cool, get up to Pyramid, Lahontan or Tahoe, take a picnic, and enjoy.
