Nobody Asked Us, But ... Lock your doors to protect yourself

A warning: A friend of ours in Reno had a young man come to her door to sell her one candy bar. She declined, and thought it was odd he only had one bar with him. A week ago, she heard a knock on her door. She ignored it, thinking it was FedEx, but then she heard it again. The third time, she looked out the door and saw another young man. Just as she saw him, she looked out her side window and saw the "candy seller" sneaking into her back yard. Without thinking, she ran out of the house, yelling, "Get out of here," and in doing so brought out the whole neighborhood. Someone called the police, and within two minutes, their helicopter was overhead, and two patrol cars were on the street.

The moral of this story is: keep your front door locked, and, if you don't know who's there, don't open it or let them in. They have now set up a neighborhood watch, and the police said they would patrol more frequently. She is grateful for her good neighbors and great police response. She hopes we all take heed and be aware.

In a similar story ... another friend of ours saw a strange car parked in his neighborhood as he was leaving for work, and decided to watch the car from a distance. Suddenly, a man got out and proceeded to go through his garbage. He immediately returned to his house believing the man was looking for bills, etc., for identity theft, and confronted the man. Turns out he was 80 years old and was looking for aluminum cans. It is, however, a reason to shred your private information.

Kim Johnston got this off the Internet, but swears it was probably her mother: "Beware of Clothing Donation Scam ... I just received a call from a charity asking me to donate some of my clothes to the starving people throughout the world. I told them to buzz off - anybody who fits in my clothes isn't starving." Very astute. Unkind, but astute.

We hoped you voted in the primary election. The cheers and crying are now over until the general in November. If you didn't vote, get to the city Clerk's office and register (or DMV). If you don't vote, don't complain.

One delightful thing about voting was getting to see a lot of friends, and to be sung to by a gentleman who was just behind M in line. She got a hug and a chorus of "'Til there was you" from "Oklahoma." Thank you, Christopher, it doesn't get any better than that.
