COMMUNITY BRIEFLY: Purcell helps Lightning play well in two tournaments

The Reno-based Nevada Lightning 14-and-under softball team played well at the Colorado Sparkler that wrapped up on July 4.

The Lightning went 4-0 during the first two days of pool play outscoring their competition 47-15. Carson City's Jennifer Purcell blasted two homers over centerfield fence in two days. One was a solo shot and the other a two-run homer.

The Lightning was put in the Gold bracket to start elimination play. They won the first two games in the gold bracket, and then lost to the Firecrackers. On Saturday, they were matched up with the runner-up from last year's Sparkler, the New Mexico Dirt Dogs, losing 11-4.

The weekend before the Sparkler, the Nevada Lightning played up in an 18U tournament at Idlewild Park in Reno, going 6-0 to take the championship, beating Stockton's RR Gold in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Softball tryouts for

WNC are July 21

The Western Nevada College women's softball team will host tryouts from 5-7 p.m. July 21 at Carson High's softball field.

Participants are asked to enter the field from the school's north parking lot.

Players need to bring their own bat, glove, helmet and cleats. They will participate in drills that include hitting, catching, baserunning and sliding.

Eligible student athletes include high school graduates, GED holders, and new, current or former college students. There is no player age limit in the National Junior College Athletic Association, as long as a student-athlete has two years of eligibility to play college softball.

WNC is coached by Leah Wentworth and Andrea Lazzari.

WNC's Champlin

records mound win

WNC graduate Kramer Champlin, a member of the USA National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association All-Star baseball team, was the winning pitcher in a 3-1 victory over Chinese Taipei this week.

It was the first victory for the American team that is competing in the Honkbal Tournament in the Netherlands. Champlin threw 2.1 innings in relief, his only action in the tournament so far. The U.S. team has finished the first round of the double round-robin event 1-3. Other teams include Cuba, Japan and the Netherlands.

Champlin will attend Arizona State this fall.

Double eagles at

Dayton, T. Canyon

Craig Luce and John Anderson recorded rare double eagles at Dayton Valley Golf Club and Thunder Canyon, respectively, last week.

Luce's double-eagle came on the par-5 third hole. He hit a 229-yard 3-wood Tour Edge Exotic into the cup. He was using a Pro V1 ball. Ken Fiscus and Tim Crowder witnessed the shot.

Anderson's double-eagle came on the par-5 10th hole, which measures 523 yards. He holed out from 205 yards after a monster 318-yard drive.

Cockerill wins state

match play title

RENO - Former Carson High golf star J.T. Cockerill beat Scott Smith on the 37th hole to win the Nevada State Match Play tournament July 7 at Somersett Country Club.

Both Cockerill and Fallon's Scott Smith won four matches over the first two days of the tournament to advance to the 36-hole finale.

The pair was tied through 36 holes, and Cockerill made a 25-foot birdie putt while Smith missed his birdie attempt on the 37th hole.

Cockerill wrapped up another successful season at Stanislaus State. The team reached the Division II tournament.

Mackay Stadium gets

new field turf

RENO - Installation of the new field turf at the University of Nevada's Mackay Stadium has started.

The project, which involves installing 80,213 square feet of new turf, will take approximately two weeks with the scheduled completion date set for Aug. 1. The new turf will feature Nevada in the north end zone and Wolf Pack in the south, and Nevada's official logo at the 50-yard-line. The design will also have alternating lighter and darker shades of green every five yards.

Wolf Pack fans can watch live streaming of the installation from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day at www.nevadawolfpack.com.

Nevada is replacing the original artificial turf installed in 1999 with the newest version of the FieldTurf product. The project is being funded through the generous support of a group of Nevada donors.

Baker-Roberts hosting tennis camps

Diane Baker-Roberts, who is returning to coach girls tennis this fall at Carson High, is holding two tennis camps.

The first is July 19-22. The second is Aug. 9-12. Both camps are at John Mankins Park, which is located near the Silver Oak Golf Course.

Children between 4 and 6 will play from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m., and the cost is $7 a day. Players from 7 to 12 will play from 9:30 to 11 a.m., and the cost is $10.

Drop-ins are welcome. All participants need a racket and tennis shoes. Tennis balls will be provided. Participants should also bring water.

Horseshoe Club wins

Sertoma golf event

The Carson Horseshoe Club team won the Sertoma Charity Golf Tournament at Empire Ranch on July 11.

Both Carson and the Senior Center team shot a 5-under-par 67. The Horseshoe team won the tie-breaker.

Tim McCarthy, Gary Scheuller, John Syrotynski and Dave Jones were members of the Horseshoe squad. Marvin Richardville, Bill Paradise, Ray Ulrich and Dave Jones were members of the Senior Center team.

Douglas girls have

success in soccer

After winning the state title in November, several members of the Douglas High School girls' soccer team set out simply to find a spring traveling club that would be attending highly-competitive tournaments outside of Northern Nevada.

The goal from the start was to get more exposure in front of college coaches. After a wildly-successful spring, it appears they are going to get just that.

Nine Douglas players helped the Real Reno FC Select 94 club to a Western Regional championship in Modesto, Calif., at the end of June. The regional title gave Real Reno a berth into the US Club National Championships at Virginia Beach, Va., next weekend.

In winning the regional championship, the team became the first Northern Nevada girls' squad to ever advance to nationals.

Douglas is represented by Brianna Randall, Alex Laing, Cora Moody, Alison Chambon, Holly Downer, Kaitlyn Varble, Shannon Hubbard, Shannon Prinz and Tia Lyons on the team.

CHS summer hoop

camp scheduled

The annual Senators Summer Slam basketball camp is scheduled for July 19-20

in the main gymnasium at Carson High School.

The camp promotes the positive in teaching girls and boys (between the ages of 8 and 15) basic fundamentals with special attention paid to ball handling, defense and shooting. There also will be games played daily.

Each camper receives a basketball and T-shirt. The cost is $120. The camp runs from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day.

McLean, Budjako

Goldberg triumph

Robert McLean, Matthew Budjako and Albert Goldberg won their respective flights in the Carson Valley Men's Club Handicap Stroke Play tournament on July 12 in Gardnerville.

McLean won the first flight with a net 66, edging Jesus Ray by one shot. Budjako won the second flight with a 65, edging John Dorman by two shots. Goldberg fired a 62 and beat Gerald Bing by two strokes.

Quartet shoots 120

to win Cha Cha

Bob Lewis, Roland Owings, Alex Talmant and Buzz Wagner shot a 120 to win the Silver Oak Cha Cha Cha Tournament on July 6.

Tony Barbaria, Terry Thomas, Dick Green and Jim Silsby finished in second place at 125.

Will Keating (No. 2), Chris Gottschalk (No. 6), Vern Rosse (No. 12) and Gary Helseth (No. 14) won closest-to-the-hole honors.

T. Canyon quartet

wins by three

Bianca Daykin, Pamela Whalen, Susie Riley and Brooke Nielsen shot a 129 to win Thunder Canyon's Ladies Guest Day Cha Cha Cha Tournament on July 8.

Mary Anderson, Charlotte Sullivan, Charlotte Graham and Monica Pike were second at 132, a stroke ahead of Theresa Beggs, Ursula Tracy, Nancy Maloy and Kathy Cockerill.

T. Canyon event

The team of Saul Singer, Bill Stanley, Larry Goodnight and Vern Hamilton shot 119 to easily win the Thunder Canyon Men's Club Cha Cha Cha tourney.

Burt Clements, Dave Mello, Keith Gottschalk and Leland Sullivan were second at 125, while Fran Menante, Jim Fitzpatrick, Bret Andreas and Steve Loos were third at 127.

Moorman wins

Eric Moorman shot a net 62 to win the Silver Oak Men's Club Individual Stroke Play Tournament on July 4.

Jonas Sanders was next at 64, Kevin Johnson was third at 66 and Craig Luce was fourth with a 68.

Poker Run set

for Saturday

The second annual Josh Farler Helping Hands Foundation Poker Run is set for 8:30 a.m. Saturday.

The registration desk is set up at Harris Garage. You must sign up there for proper benefit requirements. From Harris' Garage, continue to Casino West in Yerington and then to Rhinos in Bridgeport. From there riders will continue on to the Walker General Store and then to Iggy & Squiggy's in Holbrook Junction. The next-to-last stop is the CG Bar in Wellington with the final stop at Mountain View Park in Yerington.

Big Dogs have a three-point lead over Cues Yer Daddy in the Mosconi League of the Carson City chapter of the American Poolplayers Association.

In the Comstock Division, 9-Spoke leads Twisted Stix with Attitudes by five points.

David Giovacchini leads the 6-7 tier in the Mosconi Division with 22 points. Dennis Sisson Jr. leads the 4-5 tier with 23 points and Anthony Cupp and Justin Harris, both from Fun Tickets, are tied for first in the 2-3 tier with 16 points.

Daniel McRae of Cornbread & Whiskey leads the 6-9 tier in the Comstock Division with 33 points, while Robert Wilson of Poke 'N' Hope tops the 4-5 tier with 29 points. Gloria Rodriguez of Twisted Stix leads the 1-3 tier with 21 points.

Babe Ruth stars

start play Saturday

The Carson City Babe Ruth 14-year-old all-stars play Walker River at 1 p.m. Saturday in the first round of the Northern Nevada Tournament at Lampe Park.

If Carson wins the opener, it will play South Tahoe at 1 p.m. Sunday. A loss would put Carson into a 5 p.m. game on Tuesday.
