Guided hike to view birds and scenery

The Tahoe Institute for Natural Science, the Tahoe Rim Trail Association and the Lahontan Audubon Society are sponsoring this moderately difficult hike from the Mount Rose Trailhead to Galena Falls in search of late summer birds and spectacular scenery from 7 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 15.

Take time to enjoy the birds and soak in great views before arriving at Galena Falls and the surrounding alpine meadows. Possible avian participants are the Green-tailed Towhee, Clark's Nutcracker, Mountain Bluebird, and MacGillivray's Warbler.

Summer full moon Tahoe Rim Trail hikes

Members of the Tahoe Rim Trail Association can experience the Tahoe Rim Trail at dusk with casually paced hikes for all ages.

Bring a flashlight, a wind-proof layer and water. Register in advance only, and please no dogs on this hike. Hikes are from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 25; Tuesday, Aug. 24; Thursday, Sept. 23; and Saturday, Oct. 23.

TRTA Membership is required to attend and space is limited so advance sign-up is required. All full moon hikes start at the Tahoe Meadows Trailhead. For information or to sign-up call the TRTA office at 775-298-0238 or e-mail programs@tahoerimtrail.org.

Guided hike along Lower and Upper Echo Lakes

Hike the Tahoe Rim Trail on the southern portion of Desolation Wilderness along Lower and Upper Echo Lakes. Climb toward Haypress Meadows to discover what wildflowers the heavy snows delivered. Dip down to Lake of the Woods for lunch before the return hike.

Tahoe Museum features water skiing history at Tahoe

HOMEWOOD - The Tahoe Maritime Museum in Homewood is hosting a Water Ski Weekend Thursday through Saturday.

There will be a water ski roundtable discussion at 5 p.m. Thursday at the museum, 5205 West Lake Blvd., Homewood. The panel will discuss the history of water skiing at Lake Tahoe and feature Mary Jo Shepherd, Lee Schmidt, Randy Walker, Les Bartlett and Ron Rupp. Admission is $8 adults, free for children under 12 and includes light refreshments.

The On-the-Water Exhibition of Water Skiing will be from 8-10 a.m. Friday at Obexer's Marina in Homewood. The event will feature a demonstration of aquaplaning, slalom skiing, kneeboarding, double skiing, wake boarding and wake skating. View the exhibition from the shore or by boat. Admission is free for all ages.

Living History Day is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the museum. There will be temporary exhibits, activities for children, raffles and guided tours at noon and 2 p.m. Admission is free.

Guided hike of Mount Rose Summit

Hike a ridge on the foot of Mt. Haughton to gain 200 feet in the first half mile; then cross that ridge to traverse for the next two miles with a zero elevation gain on the Sunday, Aug. 29 hike to Mount Rose Summit. Along the way experience great views of Lake Tahoe initially and then the destination begins to dominate the vista. The final two and a half miles to the summit are interrupted only by a few switchbacks along the way up the more than 1,700 feet to the top of this old volcano.

Please register in advance for this hike as space is limited. Please, no pets on this hike. 'If Dreams Were Clouds' art hike at Squaw Valley

Music, art, dance and poetry unite in the Sierra Nevada at 6,200 feet during the seventh annual art hike produced by Trails and Vistas on Saturday, Sept. 11, and Sunday, Sept. 12, at Squaw Valley USA in Olympic Valley, Calif.

Advance tickets, cost $25 for adults and $10 for students. Tickets will be an additional $5 after July 31 and can be purchased at www.trailsandvistas.org or by calling (530) 587-2757.

Audience members, led by an experienced guide, hike in small groups pausing at eight art venues, each set against the striking backdrop of towering granite rock faces and cascading mountains.

Capacitor, a renowned ensemble of dancers, headlines the 2010 art hike with an orchestra of moving bodies set to the earthy sounds of the didgeridoo. San Francisco's interdisciplinary dance company collaborates with the scientific and art community to create mind-expanding, heart-gripping live performances.

Women's Only Downhill Mountain Bike Clinic

Join Team LUNA Chix Tahoe and LUNA Pro Marla Streb for a women's only beginner downhill mountain bike clinic on Aug. 21 at Northstar at Tahoe Mountain Bike Park. The clinic will be 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and includes personal instruction, lift ticket, lunch and downhill t-shirts

Marla Streb, a National Downhill champion in the Unites States, will host this clinic for women riders ready to get out there and learn the technical skills to improve their riding ability. Space is limited to 10 participants.

Triathlon in Churchill County set for Aug. 21

The annual Dust Devil Sprint Triathlon is set for Aug. 21 and is sanctioned by USA Triathlon.

The event takes you into Churchill County Indoor Pool for a one-third mile swim; a fourteen-mile, no hill, paved bike ride in rural Fallon; and a 5K run around Laura Mills Park.

Cost is $55 and $100 per team.

Age groups range from 16 years and up.

Fun run on July 24

The first Obstacle Challenge Fun Run brought to you by The Developmental Asset Office with the Churchill County School District and The Parks and Recreation Department will be July 24.

Check-in is at 8 a.m. Each entrant will receive a T-shirt and prizes are available for finishers. Cost is $15 per person, $10, if you register and sign up with a youth.

Sugar Bowl to host kids adventures

Sugar Bowl Ski Resort on Donner Summit has Kids Adventure Day Camps July 26-30 with kids divided up by ages.

Little ones (ages 4-6) explore the forest, wetlands and bugs. Ages 7-10 take part in predator and prey tours and see the petroglyphs on Donner Summit, while those 11-14 enjoy geology games, railroad tunnels and kayaking Donner Lake.
