Nobody asked us, but ... Make an educated choice at the polls

Sixty-six years ago today, D-Day, the Allies invaded the beaches of Normandy in France to begin the end of World War II. Called "Operation Overlord," the invasion forces were met with stiff resistance. Despite heavy casualties, the Allied armies prevailed and established their presence on the European continent by the end of June. From that point on, they were able to march through France into the heart of the German Reich, where the Germans surrendered to them unconditionally on May 7, 1945. They all deserve our thanks and respect.

One of the freedoms they fought for should be taken advantage of on Tuesday, June 8. Don't pass up voting in the primary. It's your duty.

Now time for a U-turn, and go to a joke Ken Fraser got off the Internet: "A young man excitedly tells his mother he's getting married. 'Just for fun, Ma, I'm going to bring over three women and you have to guess which one is the girl.' His mother agrees, so the next day he brings three beautiful women into the house and sits them on the couch while they chat for a while. He then says, 'OK, Ma, which one am I going to marry?' She immediately replies, 'The redhead in the middle.' Stunned, the young man says, 'That's amazing, Ma. You're right. How did you know?' 'I don't like her.'"

Birthday greetings go out to Al Nicholson, Don Rudin, Rudy Schmid, Dixie Prather and Rhonda Brown. May they all be happy ones. On the sad side, Carolyn's cousin, Alice in Idaho, passed away last week after a long illness, so C returned to Idaho for the funeral. Our sympathy to her entire family.

"Divine Signs," a business owned by Robert Achen (434-4543), makes signs to put in car windows "In memory of..." C says they are very reasonable, since her whole family now has them in memory of her mother. Last week we were talking about the servers at all our favorite restaurants and forgot the Villa Basque Deli ... they have great people, too.

For proof of life after death, we love the commercial that says "If you suffer from symptoms that result in illness or death, you may be entitled to compensation." Good luck, but do let us know if you come back to collect.

Jonni Moon walked out of Carson Lanes on Monday to discover a flat tire. Two nice young bowlers, Kyle Lasteri and Jacob Jones, helped change it, and Kary Doman and Justin Yata also pitched in. When she got to the Les Schwab's north of Carson, Brian had it fixed and changed in half an hour. Good work everyone. She finally got home and her "cooler" man, Jim Asbill, stopped by and asked when he could hook it up. She had just been thinking of that, so, all in all, it was a good day in spite of the flat. Thanks to all.

The BAC presents pianist Ron Williams at 7:30 p.m. June 17 in the Performance Hall (call 883-1976 for details and information). There's a reception and it's free. A real treat. Then the Carson City Symphony's 26th annual Pops Party at the Governor's Mansion will be at 2 p.m. June 13. It's also free, and will be a wonderful afternoon. Bring blankets and lawn chairs. You will be able to buy snacks, drinks and raffle tickets, too. The Chamber Singers will also perform, along with surprise "guest" artists. Enjoy!

Again, don't forget to Vote Tuesday; and don't forget to see who has grudges against whom, who is buying the lawn signs, and backing the TV commercials; in other words, get educated! And thanks for taking part.
