Incumbent Randy Carlson will face Barbara Myers in the November general election for the Carson City School Board's District 6.
Myers, who served eight years on the Nevada State Board of Education and as a trustee for 12 years on local school boards in California, received 39.6 percent of the vote in Tuesday's primary election.
She said she decided to run after seeing veteran members leave the board due to term limits.
"I think they better have some experience on that board because the next legislative session is probably going to be worse than the last one," she said. "I don't think Nevada has experienced those kinds of cuts before. California has, and it's not pretty. Someone has to be able to hit the ground running."
Randy Carlson, who was appointed to the board in December to replace Barbara Howe, said he "plans to put up a fight."
"I think I have a more constructive view of how the district can go," he said. "We need to engage the parents to improve the performance of our students. If we do that, we'll have a fine school district. I don't think we get better schools by slashing everything in sight."
Ron Swirczek and Julie Bushner will advance to the general election in the District 1 race.
"I'm excited, but I was very humbled," Bushner said. "I think I ran against some very good candidates. I feel very fortunate to have gotten this far."
Swirczek could not be reached for comment.
Stacie Wilke is running unopposed in the District 3 race as is Lynette Conrad in District 4.
