Storey County Undersheriff Gerald Antinoro will face off with television personality John Tyson for the seat of sheriff, while Storey County Assistant District Attorney Laura Grant will go up against former judge Bill Maddox for district attorney.
"I like the showing that we made. I think that it's pretty clear that the citizens of the county want to keep things moving forward in a progressive manner,"said Antinoro at a celebration at Piper's Opera House in Virginia City.
Tyson celebrated the night at home with about a dozen friends.
"I'm very, very pleased, and I feel confident we're going to win this race, and once we win this race we're going to have a department that people can be proud of and people can feel secure with," Tyson said.
The hotly contested non-partisan sheriff's race had a packed ticket with five candidates. Antinoro garnered 43.71 percent of the vote with 622 ballots cast in his favor. Tyson, a Reno TV news reporter, former police and security officer and longtime Storey reserve officer, brought in 31.69 percent with 451 votes. Sheriff Jim Miller decided against running for re-election.
Maddox beat challenger Dave Neidert in the partisan race for District Attorney by 92 votes. The former Carson City district attorney, judge and federal prosecutor will face off with Democratic challenger Laura Grant who ran unopposed in the primary election.
"There's a lot of interesting things coming up in the future in Storey County. I look forward to being involved in that and giving legal advice to the county commission and other agencies up there," Maddox said. "It's been a real joy to go up there and meet the people."
District Attorney Harold Swafford is retiring.
