In his first foray into public office, Assistant Storey County Undersheriff Gerald Antinoro beat his challenger John Tyson to win the seat of sheriff, while former Carson City judge Bill Maddox, old hat to campaigning, beat Laura Grant to become district attorney.
"I am on top of the world," said a jubilant Antinoro late Tuesday night from his election party at the Old Corner Bar in Piper's Opera House in Virginia City.
Antinoro brought home 1,275 votes to John Tyson's 813.
"I'm going to live up to what I've said. I've told folks all over the county that I will not let them down and I will not," said Antinoro. "We are going to provide professional progressive law enforcement and we are not going backward."
Maddox beat out Laura Grant, assistant Storey County district attorney, by 317 votes with 57.68 percent to Grant's 42.32 percent.
Maddox recently retired as a Carson City district judge. From 1981-84 he was district attorney in Carson City and from 1985-90 he was U.S. attorney for Nevada.
"I appreciate the hard work that Laura Grant did. It was a good race. And I'm ready to do a good job for Storey County," said Maddox.
In other Storey County races:
• Jana Seddon secured 54.33 percent of the vote to retain her position as county assessor. She beat out opponent Anita Honea by 1,047 votes to 880.
• William Sjovangen was voted in as District 1 county commissioner with 51.85 percent of the vote. He received 1,066 votes to Larry Prater's 990.
• For county recorder, Jennifer Chapman won 57.55 percent of the vote, beating incumbent Sarah Jensen by 1,170 to 863 votes.
