Carson City company helping in the Gulf

A Carson City-based company that produces a technology that can filter water is offering its services in the Gulf of Mexico to help clean up the BP oil spill.

CINC Industries, located off of Arrowhead Drive in north Carson City, produces a centrifuge, which looks like a tube with a mechanism that separates the water from the oil. The company has installed its product in other areas of the country where water had become contaminated.

The small Carson City operation, which used to be owned by the actor Kevin Costner, has been inundated with media and business requests since news broke earlier last month that they would be helping in the gulf to help clean up the oil spill caused by the Deepwater Horizon oil rig.

The environmental disaster started on April 20 when an explosion on the oil rig damaged an oil well about a mile beneath the ocean surface, spewing millions of gallons of oil into the gulf for more than 50 days.

BAWN to offer help for single women

Single women who need help with simple home repair can apply for free assistance through the Builder's Association of Western Nevada.

The Helping Hands program, launched last year, sends professional home builders as volunteers to homes with single women who need anything from a light fixture installed to a hallway painted.

BAWN will accept applications from women living without a husband or boyfriend. Any ages can apply

Applications can be sent to Maura Freeman at 775-882-4353 or mfreeman@bawn.org by June 30.

Freeman said the majority of applicants who receive help are elderly. None of the project can require a permit or professional electrical or plumbing service and must be completed within one day. She said 15 women were selected out of more than 90 applications last year.

The organization will determine which applicants to help on July 28 and will make the repairs on Sept. 25.
