Vacation Bible school for First Presbyterian

First Presbyterian Church will host a vacation Bible school June 21-25 in the Family Life Center, at the corner of Division and Musser streets.

Those interested should register at the church office at 306 W. Musser St. or come early Monday evening to register at the door.

Registration is $10 per child with $20 maximum per family. Scholarships are available.

The camp will feature "SON-Castle," and children will visit the King's Banquet Hall, the Castle Construction Site, the Jolly Dragon Inn, the Throne Room and the Royal Treasury.

They will sing praises to King Jesus, help make snacks and play games at the Royal Tournament.

Kids ages 4 through kindergarten meet 6-7:30 p.m. and first- through fifth-graders meet 6-8:30 p.m.

The Kids Helping Kids mission project for vacation Bible school will go toward helping children in Haiti.

Free Southern Gospel concert on Monday

The Couriers will perform a free concert at 7 p.m. Monday at The Good Shepherd Wesleyan Church, 1505 Railroad Dr.

Dave Kyllonen, Duane Nicholson and Neil Enloe, students at Bible school, formed a music ministry team five decades ago called The Couriers.

For the next 25 years they would perform in well over 10,000 venues including churches, concert halls, prisons, and hospital rooms. They recorded more than 40 albums.

Contra Dance honors summer solstice

A Summer Solstice dance will be from 6-8:30 p.m. Sunday at the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada, 813 N. Carson St.

Darla Bayer will be the caller, and Train Wreck will provide live music. The potluck snack this month is fruit.

The evening begins with a brief beginner workshop to teach the dance steps that will be used in the first several dances. The dances become progressively harder through the evening.

Organizers recommend bringing a water bottle. Enter the children's museum by the door on the north side of the building, on Ann Street. Come up the stairs and into the main hall.

Cost is $10 adults, $5 youth 16-25, $1 children. For more information, call 997-4937.

$5 bag sale to benefit cancer care advocates

Cared 4 Seconds is hosting a $5 bag sale to make room for new inventory from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at 1801 Highway 50 East. All proceeds go to Carson Advocates for Cancer Care.

The sale includes toddler and baby clothes as well as men's women's and plus-size clothing.

State museum hosts basket workshop

Join master basket weaver, Cat Mena from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 17 at the Nevada State Museum for a hands-on basket-making workshop.

Participants will complete a Cherokee Wheel Basket, constructed with naturally dyed reeds using walnut hulls for a rich brown color.

Mena has been teaching basketry workshops for 20 years. The class will concentrate on several different weaving techniques and includes a discussion on natural dyes. Mena is a member of the Great Basin Basketmakers.

Mena's workshop complements the exhibit, Interwoven 2010: Visions

of the Great Basin Basketmakers, on display at the Nevada State Museum through July 24.

This class is suitable for ages 15 through adult. Cost is $38 which includes all materials, instruction and entrance to museum exhibits.

Kids triathlon set for July 10

The Carson Tigersharks and the Carson City Aquatic Facility will be hosting Capital City Kid's Triathlon from 8 a.m. to noon July 10. The race consists of swimming, biking and running, just like the adult version. All activities take place within the Aquatic Facility and Mills Park.

Organizers say this is a fun, challenging and motivating event for children ages 4-18. Distances vary according to age.

Pre-registration at the Carson Aquatic Facility is recommended, but registrations will also be taken the morning of the race.

Each participant will receive a triathlon T-shirt, and every finisher will receive a medal. The cost is $15 for children who pre-register, $20 for race-day entries.

Farmers Market begins today

The 3rd & Curry St. Farmers Market kicks off today at the corner of Curry and Third streets.

Be sure to look for cherries, strawberries, raspberries, apricots, peaches, plums, nectarines, asparagus, lettuce, zucchini, garlic, onions, green beans, honey and fresh eggs, along with herbs, flowers and veggie starts.

Master Gardener training in fall

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension's new Master Gardener training runs Sept. 7 through Nov. 9. Classes will meet Mondays and Tuesdays at noon at the Carson City and Douglas County Cooperative Extension offices.

Those interested are asked to attend pre-class orientation June 29 from

9-10:30 a.m. at the Carson City Cooperative Extension office at 2621 Northgate Lane, Suite 12.

Master Gardeners are leaders in environmental stewardship who teach the community and answer gardening questions.

Participants must take the required courses, pass an open-book exam, and donate 50 hours of community service in order become a certified Master Gardener. Once certified, Master Gardeners will receive volunteering opportunities throughout the year. To maintain certification, they must volunteer a minimum of 30 hours per year.
