LAS VEGAS (AP) - Supporters of Nevada Sen. Harry Reid are airing a new TV ad that criticizes Republican Sharron Angle for proposing to phase out Social Security and Medicare.

Angle's campaign says her record is being distorted in the 30-second ad run by the Patriot Majority. The group that's funded in part by unions and run by Democratic operative Craig Varoga that launched a similar ad last week.

Angle wants current retirees to continue receiving benefits but says younger workers should be shifted into private systems rather than government-run programs.

Angle spokesman Jerry Stacy says the commercial attempts to divert attention from Nevada's highest-in-the-nation unemployment rate.

Reid says in a statement he's working to lure new jobs to the state.
