Local students win awards at state math competition

Merrill Asp of Carson High School was named the District II winner in the Nevada State Prize Examination in High School Mathematics.

He was awarded $300.

Brian Buonacorsi, Connie Duong, Kyle Smith and Asp of Carson High, and Bart Niday, Dylan Lane, Evan Kleiner, Justin Donat, Nolan Nicholson and Yuchen Jin of Douglas High School received certificates of merit.

Receiving the award for best paper in their schools were Asp of Carson High, Nicholson of Douglas High and Mara Chapman of Virginia City High School.

The competition, held at the University of Nevada, Reno, includes 40 multiple-choice questions to be completed in 80 minutes and 10 problems to solve in 30 minutes that may include drawing graphs, writing calculations or trigonometric proofs. The exam includes algebra, geometry, trigonometry and logic.
