Washoe Seeress: When Mrs. Bowers' name is mentioned people laugh derisively, but someone is sure to call in the fact that the old lady predicted the big fire, the Sierra Nevada boom and lots of other things. Whenever the Washoe Seeress of Storey sees good times ahead, we all have sneaking confidence in her ability to lighten dark caverns of futurity to the innermost recesses.

120 YEARS AGO

Wedding Bells at Winters Mansion: Nellie Winters and John M. Gregory were brought to the wilderness of Washoe Valley in sleigh and ushered into the spacious and beautiful parlors of the homestead of Hon. Theodore Winters. On the walls hung paintings of fruits, flowers and scenes: the work of the bride's own hands. The west end of the house had a floral arch, constructed of vines and flowers of California. When it came time to give the bride away, the father of the bride Hon. Winters, broke down and sobbed.
