Carson City Soroptimists honors girls of the month

Soroptimist International of Carson City recently honored Girl of the Month recipients at a luncheon held at the Carson City Nugget.

• The December 2009 Girl of the Month is Mariah Tompkins, niece of Douglas and Joni Hebler. Mariah is active in the National Honors Society for Academics, Skills USA (Web Design Club) for which she was a Vice-President and received 2nd Place for her web design and has been active in the PTSA Craft Fair, canned food drives, Robert House Fundraisers. She has received an Academic Letter, Varsity Soccer Letter, is on the Honor Roll. Mariah is planning to attend UN,R and hoping to get accepted into the Nursing School to study to become a RN and work as a nurse at a local hospital. Mariah loves soccer, volleyball, photography, shopping, traveling, family, and friends.

• Yvonne Hollett is the January Girl of the Month. Laura is the daughter of Verne and Andrea Hollett. Yvonne is active in the National Honors Society, Varsity Basketball, and has participated in Varsity Cross Country, track, Senior Core Team, Diosocene Youth Council, Food Fair for World Hunger and is a Confirmation Retreat Leader. Yvonne has received Academic letters since her Freshman year, varsity letter in track, cross-country and basketball, was selected for the All-State Academic Team for cross-country and basketball and an Outstanding Achievement Award in 2007. She was the best girls basketball defensive player in 2006 and 2007; top female cross-country runner from 2006 to 2008 and won the State championship in 2007 and 2009 in cross-country running. Yvonne plans to study medicine, specifically Radiology but is also exploring Oral Surgery.

• The February Girl of the Month is Laura G. Sosa. Laura is the daughter of Martin and Oralia Sosa. Laura competed in the National Junior Olympics Championship races. She bred, raised and showed lambs and goats in 4-H and volunteered as an Altar server at her church for eight years. Laura has been active in track and field, swimming, tennis, National Honors Society and her church. She plays three types of Saxophones (Tenor, baritone and alto sax) in three different bands (Jazz band, wind ensemble and the Blue Thunder Marching Band) at Carson High School. Laura would like to attend either Stanford, Notre Dame, Tulane, Loyola-New Orleans, Fordham or UN,R and study Psychology in order to be able to help others. Laura has five siblings one of which is attending Tulane University and another at UN,R.

Soroptimist International of Carson City is a Service Organization devoted to bettering the lives of Women and Children, in our community.
