Twins blank Bosox

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) - Justin Morneau marked his return for Minnesota with a two-run double and Tim Wakefield tossed two scoreless innings for Boston in his first post-surgery appearance in a 5-0 victory by the Twins over the Red Sox on Friday.

Morneau doubled to right in the first inning against Jon Lester, his first on-field action since a stress fracture in his lower back shut him down in mid-September.

Wakefield had surgery to repair a herniated disk in his back last October. The 43-year-old knuckleballer threw 16 of his 21 pitches for strikes, giving up one hit without a walk.

Lester gave up four runs on three hits and two walks in an inning.

Royals 4, Rangers 2

SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) - Zack Greinke pitched three scoreless innings. He struck out three and walked none. David Murphy's two-out single in the first was the only hit Greinke allowed.

Scott Feldman, a 17-game winner last season with the Rangers, allowed a run on three hits in two innings.

Rick Ankiel tripled in the fourth and scored on Alberto Callaspo's sacrifice fly.

Rays 12, Yankees 7

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Yankees right-hander Joba Chamberlain struggled in his first spring training start, allowing five runs, three hits and three walks in 1 1-3 innings.

Phil Hughes, Chamberlain's main rival for the Yankees' No. 5 starter role, allowed one run and one hit, a solo shot in the first by Sean Rodriguez, in two innings.

Tampa Bay left-hander David Price allowed two hits over 1 2-3 scoreless innings. He struck out two and walked one.

Blue Jays 14, Phillies 9

DUNEDIN, Fla. (AP) - Lyle Overbay hit a three-run double and Jose Bautista a two-run double during an eight-run fourth inning for the Blue Jays.

Right-hander Brandon Morrow, acquired by the Blue Jays in a trade with Seattle, pitched two hitless innings in his first bid to become part of their starting rotation.

Phillies reliever J.C. Ramirez gave up four runs on five hits in 1 1-3 innings.

Marlins 4, Mets (ss) 3, 10 innings

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) - The Marlins' Chris Volstad and Mets' Jon Niese each looked sharp in their spring mound debuts.

Niese gave up a run in 2 2-3 innings and struck out five. He walked two and gave up three singles. Niese was sidelined by a hamstring tear after making five starts last season.

Volstad struck out two in two scoreless innings. He gave up two singles and did not walk a batter.

Mets new outfielder Jason Bay doubled to right to give the Mets a 2-1 lead in the third.

Mets (ss) 7, Cardinals 3

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) - Brad Penny pitched two innings in his St. Louis debut, allowing three runs and six hits. Three of those hits were soft flyballs that landed just beyond the infield.

Designated hitter Shawn Riggans drove in the go ahead run with a single and Frank Catalanotto's pinch-hit triple in the ninth scored two runs. Tigers 17, Astros 7

LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) - Joel Zumaya allowed three runs in two innings.

Astros starter Wandy Rodriguez allowed three runs in two innings. He walked three.

Houston reliever Polin Trinidad walked all four batters he faced to lead off the eighth inning before being lifted. Giants 7, Rockies (ss) 4

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Juan Uribe hit a three-run homer to spoil Jeff Francis' return to the mound for Colorado after missing the entire 2009 season.

Francis, who had shoulder surgery in February 2009 and had not pitched since Sept. 12, 2008, gave up four runs on four hits and walked two while throwing 33 pitches in two innings.

Giants right-hander Matt Cain looked solid in his first spring outing, giving up a run on five hits while striking out two in three innings.

Rockies (ss) 7, Angels 5

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - Held up by a traffic jam, Ubaldo Jimenez arrived too late to start and instead made his spring training debut out of the bullpen for the Colorado Rockies.

A bus crash that killed six people and left more than 15 others injured just south of Tempe caused major traffic in the area. Jimenez was delayed nearly two hours by the accident and worked the fourth and fifth innings, allowing three hits and four runs (three earned) in two innings. He walked two and struck out three.

Colorado's team bus arrived to the game on time.

Colorado roughed up Angels starter Sean O'Sullivan, scoring four runs in the first. Clint Barmes hit a solo homer and Ian Stewart had a two-run double, his first of three hits.

Indians 9, Reds 2

GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) - Asdrubal Cabrera opened Cleveland's spring training season with a homer and Grady Sizemore had a two-run double in his return from a pair of operations.

Padres 9, Mariners 3

PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) - Garrett Olson gave up six runs while getting only two outs for Seattle.

Sean Gallagher, picked up in a trade with the Oakland A's last summer, pitched two scoreless innings. Mat Latos gave up a run in two innings and Wade LeBlanc allowed two runs - one earned - in two innings.

Chase Headley, who moved from left field to third base when the Padres traded Kevin Kouzmanoff to Oakland in January, had a two-run single in four at-bats. Dodgers 8, White Sox 3

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Manny Ramirez had two singles as the designated hitter and Vincent Padilla threw two hitless innings for Los Angeles Dodgers.

Chicago's Mark Buehrle allowed an unearned run and three hits in two innings.

Cubs 8, Diamondbacks 7

MESA, Ariz. (AP) - Justin Upton hit a sixth-inning grand slam, his first hit since signing a $51.25 million, six-year contract with Arizona.

Brad Snyder hit a two-run, ninth-inning double off Esmerling Vasquez to rally Chicago in a game that began with the Cubs' Carlos Zambrano and Diamondbacks' Dan Haren each pitching two hitless innings.

Tyler Colvin had a two-run single and a double, giving the Cubs' No. 1 2006 amateur pick three doubles, a homer, a single and three RBIs in six at-bats.

Braves 11, Nationals 8

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) - Yunel Escobar went 3 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored and Melky Cabrera had two hits and an RBI for the Braves. Rookie Jordan Heyward had a hit and stole his second base of the spring.

Atlanta's new closer Billy Wagner gave up three hits and two runs in an inning. He followed Derek Lowe, who pitched two scoreless innings.

Ian Desmond homered and drove in six runs for the Nationals.

Pirates 5, Orioles 3

SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) - Zach Duke made his spring debut, pitching two innings to help Pittsburgh earn its first victory.

An All-Star last season, Duke is likely to start for the Pirates on opening day. He gave up one run and two hits before the Pirates rallied. Tony Sanchez, the fourth overall pick in the 2009 amateur draft, hit a tying homer in the eighth.

Adam Jones homered for Baltimore and Chris Tillman worked two perfect innings in his first start.
