A dozen Carson City students met recently at the Nevada Appeal to begin laying the groundwork for a new publication they hope will combine journalism with school fundraising.
The idea of Carole Thompson, who also created the Kids' Talking Wall at the Carson Mall, said the students voted to name their newspaper The Zeal of the Appeal.
Thompson called it "something of a shout-out to the community from young voices on issues impacting Carson City."
The students want it to be more than a voice, though. They hope to sell advertising with a plan to raise money to donate to school projects.
The students are "volunteering their time and service to become part of the financial solution for education in their community," said Thompson.
The students toured the Nevada Appeal with Advertising Manager Rob Galloway and marketing consultant Tonya Champa.
In addition to writing articles, selling advertising and designing the newspaper, the students also plan to create an online Web site. They have started lining up interviews with Carson City's mayor and state legislators.
Both the new publication and the Kids' Talking Wall are projects of Partnership Carson City, a coalition of service agencies and community organizations.
Students interested in participating should contact Thompson at carole@
