Carson outlines proposed job cuts

Carson City has released the list of proposed job cuts it will present Thursday to the board of supervisors.

Missing from the list of 24 jobs are those that may need to be cut from the Sheriff's Office, City Manager Larry Werner said Tuesday.

"All we can do is reduce the sheriff's budget or recommend an amount to be cut. It's up to him to determine what, if any, positions will go," Werner said.

The board of supervisors has final say over the proposals, he said.

Four of the 24 positions on the list are already vacant - a full-time animal regulation officer and three full-time firefighter/paramedics.

Fire Chief Stacey Giomi said he hopes that by the start of the fiscal year July 1, there will be some retirements so that even though positions will be lost, no one will have to be laid off.

"I'm hopeful," he said.

In his department, he will lose one of three fire inspectors. Of the 57 firefighters, six positions are

targeted for elimination.

"I haven't been filling positions when people left since July 1 because we kind of expected this was coming," Giomi said.

Other city positions on the chopping block are:

• Two full-time library assistants and six part-time library employees

• Parks and Recreation Department part-time aid supervisor, three full-time building maintenance workers, one full-time head lifeguard, one full-time reservation coordinator and one part-time clerical position.

• One part-time mail courier from the Finance Department
