WASHINGTON (AP) - A commission charged with coming up with recommendations on how to store the nation's nuclear waste has started what co-chairman Lee Hamilton calls its "daunting task."

Hamilton, a former Democratic congressman from Indiana, is co-chairing the commission with former National Security Adviser Brent Scowcroft.

The commission began its meetings Thursday as some in Congress criticize the Obama administration for abandoning Yucca Mountain in Nevada as a permanent nuclear waste repository. A House resolution was introduced this week expressing disapproval of the move.

Energy Secretary Steven Chu told commission members to look to the future - not review whether the Yucca decision was a good one. He said the panel is "not a siting commission."
