The 17th Annual Taste of Downtown is just around the corner, which means Advocates is out soliciting restaurants to participate as well as needed volunteers. I hear they currently have 38 establishments signed up. I dropped by Lady Tamales for some tamales to go and Lina said she is already registered to participate again. If your restaurant would like to be involved or you would like to help defer the cost of the wrist bands, tickets, T-shirts, signs, trolley, or banner. There are sponsorships ranging from $100 to $500 and are tax-deductible. This event is truly one of my favorite events in Carson and yes they even have a Facebook page. Check out the website for updates

Info on CMS' new dress code

Having worked for the Carson City School District for many years helping students in need, I highly respect Carson Middle School principal, Sam Santillo. He is compassionate, fair and has always put the best interest of the children first.

When I overheard two mothers discussing the uniform policy that will be implemented for the upcoming school year at CMS, I was glad to listen in on their opinions, how they completely support the new school uniform policy. Being an advocate for children I must say uniforms eliminate the effects that fashion and status of wearing brand name clothing can have within a school setting.

I know everyone has their own opinions on this matter, however wearing uniforms cuts down on expenses too. The cost of four pants and three shirts will be $70. What about the child that cannot afford to pay for the approved uniforms?

Principal Santillo stated, "Carson Middle will work one way or another with parents that are in need of assistance in obtaining uniforms." If you or your service groups would like to sponsor children that need assistance, a fund has been established. You also can purchase the pants at Walmart for only $10 each and drop them off for students in need. The online special for Walmart's premium brand, George Black and Khaki is two pair for $18. I congratulate the mothers from Bordewich/Bray and Fritsch Elementary who got the whole picture that standardized uniforms takes the attention off what everyone is wearing and places it in the classroom where it belongs.
