Book signing for 'Homeruns & Jackpots'

Area author Tim Mueller will be signing copies of his book, "Homeruns & Jackpots: Baseball in Nevada," from 12:30-3 p.m. Saturday at Borders Books on Topsy Lane.

The book, published in May 2009, is a collection of stories and interviews with players, coaches and others who have had an impact on baseball in Nevada.

Market coupon applications available

A Retired Senior Volunteer Program representative will be at the Carson City Community Center for the USDA Commodity Food distribution from 9-11 a.m. today to distribute applications for free produce for low-income seniors, 60 years of age and older who have not already made application.

Free coupons for this produce will be distributed June 15, also at the community center from 9-11 a.m. at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St.

The coupons are good at any farmer's market in Northern Nevada throughout the season after the June 15 coupon distribution.

Don't miss June 6 'Garden Faire'

The Historic St. Peter's Episcopal Church presents "A Garden Faire" from

11 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 6 at the corner of Division and Telegraph streets.

The faire will feature master gardeners from the extension office, lectures, workshops, seedlings, plants, greeting cards, crafts, cookbooks, apparel, ceramic yard art, jewelry, bird houses, gardening books, plants and flowers.

Bob Reid, author, will lecture on "Arctic Gardens: Flowers, Birds, and Animals of the North" in the Church Sanctuary at noon and 2 p.m.

Three Garden Faire baskets will be raffled. Raffle tickets are available the day of the faire. The raffle will take place at 4 p.m. You need not be present to win. Raffle tickets are $5 each or 3 for $10. For more information, call Sue Ballew at 220-6278.

Radio testing exams in Stagecoach

Regularly scheduled testing sessions for Amateur Radio licenses are available in Stagecoach. The 2010 schedule reflects a change from bi-monthly to quarterly testing.

Testing will be on the second Saturday, but only every third month. The 2010 schedule is: June 12, Sept. 11 and Dec. 11.

Registration is from

8-10 a.m. with testing ending around noon. Pre-registration is encouraged, but walk-ins also are welcome.

The exam fee for 2010 is $15. Checks should be made payable to ARRL-VEC.

Testing will take place at 8755 Cimarron Trail (the intersection of Apache and Cimarron). Signs will be posted.

If you are upgrading an existing license, bring your original license and a photocopy of that license, as well as the originals of any CSCEs you may have. Remember to bring photocopies, as there are no copying facilities on site.

Volunteers sought for Lyon Animal Shelter

Lyon County is looking for volunteers, and will hold a meeting on the at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Lyon County Animal Shelter to answer questions. Those who want to attend should call LeAna Yost at 577-5005.
